Ringbelles Roundup (12/16/15) – Taylor Made unseats Santana, new SHINE Tag Champions crowned & more thoughts on SHINE 31 card rundown, Kellie Skater & Evie win titles in Japan & more

Lexie Fyfe dropped a bucket full of announcements regarding the main title picture and the crowning of new tag team champions in a video posted onto the promotion's website last week. She added that the former champions would receive a rematch once Cherry Bomb is medically cleared to compete, all while announcing that there would a four-team tournament held to determine the brand new titleholders. Instead of spreading this tournament out a couple of shows, the promotion hurried up and booked the first round matches and subsequent final all on Friday night's show, announcing that Malia Hosaka and Brandi Wine would be taking on Leva Bates and Mia Yim and "Better Than You's "Marti Belle and Jayme Jameson would take on the "Buddy System's" Heidi Lovelace and Solo Darling. Fyfe also proclaimed that a clear, decisive number one contender could not be picked for Santana Garrett's title defense, instead, her opponent would be decided through a Fatal Four-Way Match. Allysin Kay, Jessicka Havok, Amber Gallows and Taylor Made would be fighting for the title opportunity and go onto face Garrett in the main event.

I wouldn't consider bad booking decisions to be the reason for this snafu though SHINE Wrestling has made some interesting choices this year and continued with the wishy-washy booking of the shows that they've been criticized for in the past. It's mind-boggling that Garrett's title defense against Saraya Knight was featured on an outside promotion's card and not on SHINE's platform. It's clear that Knight's involvement with the promotion is deeper than one-off appearances, especially after the spectacle at SHINE 30. Though it's never been explained, Su Yung's usual belligerent and bloodcurdling screams escalated at the sight of Knight that night, with April Hunter almost dragging her backstage. Yung's association and or perplexed relationship with Knight has never been explained for viewers to understand her reaction. In addition, Knight's unusual camaraderie with the Valkyrie is missing interpretation. She was lured back into the promotion as the hired hand to do So Cal Val's dirty work against Allysin Kay in an Anything Goes Match at SHINE 30; Knight has stood alongside the stable on occasion and helped heighten the violence that is dished upon common adversaries and throwing the atmosphere in Ybor City into catastrophic proportions. Maybe it's one of those things where all heels are "friends" and no explanation needs to be handed down because it's trivial and doesn't require anyone to be inquisitive. Call it nitpicking or whatever, but this is one of the few or many plot holes that the promotion has in its storylines.

The promotion has been too invested in building up stables and putting together tandems than building up more formidable contenders to the championships. Out of the nine matches booked on Friday night's card, eight matches involved interference and screwy finishes. Predictability can be a good thing and often times a bad thing. In SHINE's case, I expected for the screwed finishes to happen to matches that had a clear, decisive winner from the beginning and I've become accustomed these same results happening on the shows over and over again that it's expected. One of the biggest complaints I've had about the promotion in the past and present is the overbooking on the shows. Su Yung defeated her opponent, Jessica James clean, with no interference from the opposition, So Cal Val's heckling from the apron or April Hunter getting in her cheap shots. Yung blinded Jessicka Havok and Allysin Kay with her red mist during the number one contender's match and helped Taylor Made steal the roll-up victory on Amber Gallows. She again attacked Kay after the match and targeted her already injured left eye that she obtained through her mixed-martial-arts debut the weekend before. I had expected for there to be interference from Havok or Kay during Yung's match, more specifically Havok, being that her issues with Yung go back a couple of shows – that didn't happen.

Havok doesn't bother getting revenge, which is unlike her and Allysin Kay was too busy selling her injury. Weird. Two partnerships imploded on Friday night, as Thunderkitty's relationship with Legendary is no more and the Lucha Sisters are a thing of the past. Thunderkitty's intended chair shot for Mia Yim wound up cracking Brandi Wine instead, as Yim followed through with a Bridging German Suplex on Wine for the win in the opening round. Malia Hosaka returned the favor later in the show, as Wine distracted the referee while Hosaka laid out Thunderkitty with a chair shot and dragged an unconscious Luscious Latasha on top of her for the win. The shenanigans spilled over into Leilani Kai's match against Leah Von Dutch, as Thunderkitty's beatdown of her former partners distracted Kai and ultimately cost her the match. Mia Yim's growing frustration with Leva Bates reached an all-time high after losing the tournament final to Jayme Jameson and Marti Belle. Yim attacked the woman that she once considered a "best" friend and laid her out with a Package Piledriver and delivered a scathing promo about being the workhorse of the team and Bates repeatedly holding her back.

Continuing with the new champions talk... Evie, Kellie Skater, and Hiroyo Matsumoto were crowned the eighth Artist of STARDOM Champions last Sunday at Shinkiba 1st RING, as they defeated Io Shirai, Mayu Iwatani and Momo Watanabe and the team of Kris Wolf, Act Yasukawa and Kyoko Kimura in a decision three-way match for the vacant titles. Evie scored the winning pinfall in her debut for the promotion after nailing a Diving Foot Stomp on Watanabe. Hyper Destroyers' first title defense has been added to the promotion's year-end show on December 23rd, as Jungle Kyouna, Momo Watanabe, and Hiromi Mimura has stepped up to the plate and challenged the new champions. All three "destroyers" worked Sunday's card at the Biwajima Sports Center in Nagoya, Japan. Evie and Matsumoto defeated Kaori Yoneyama and Alex Lee, with Matsumoto winning with the Lariat on the latter opponent. Skater took on Momo Watanabe in singles competition and picked up the win following an International Incident. The trios title defense is the second championship match booked for the year-end show, as Io Shirai challenges Meiko Satomura for the World of STARDOM Championship. Also announced is the official retirement match of Act Yasukawa, as she teams up with Kairi Hojo and Haruka Kato to take on her Oedo Tai stablemates, Kyoko Kimura, Kris Wolf and Holidead. Starlight Kid will be taking on Azumi and Yoneyama and Mayu Iwatani will go up against Alex Lee and Datura.

The promotion has dropped another announcement in regards to things to come in the new year. There will be two debuts and a return around February, as Scottish and Canadian talent will be a part of the latest gaijin contingent. Viper and former Tough Enough competitor, Chelsea Green will be setting foot in the country for the very first time, as both are advertised on the promotion's tickets for their February 12th show at the Nagoya Chikusa Small Theater. Kay Lee Ray is also pictured on the same set of tickets – this will be her first appearance for the promotion since her debut match back in 2012 where she worked against Hailey Hatred at "Year-End Climax." That same day she fought Hatred, she and Leon went toe-to-toe with DASH Chisako and Sendai Sachiko for JWP's annual year-end show, "Climax" at Korakuen Hall, with she and Leon taking the win. Kay Lee Ray has experience working short tours of Japan through JWP – depending on the length of this tour, all competitors could be invited back down the line for further work with the promotion within the year. World Wonder Ring STARDOM has been bringing in newer talent in groups of three for three months at a time and cycling them out for other competitors and repeating those same steps over and over. The current Wonder of STARDOM Champion, Santana Garrett will be back overseas in time for that month's shows, as she too is advertised for the February 12th and 21st show at Korakuen Hall alongside Mia Yim, who will be making her debut for the promotion and long-awaited return to the country in close to four years.

Kaori Yoneyama might not have found tag team success in STARDOM, but she managed to capture the OZ Academy Tag Team Championship with Tsubasa Kuragaki over the weekend. Yoneyama and Kuragaki unseated Kagetsu and Kaho Kobayashi of the belts in their first title defense on Sunday and earned their second championship together since co-holding the Artist of STARDOM belts with Hatsuhinode Kamen last August. They became the promotion's twenty-fourth titleholders and ended the champions' second reign in their first title defense after Yoneyama pinned Kobayashi after connecting with a Diving Senton. Kaori has garnered more bookings from the promotion this year alone, whereas her partner has been a permanent fixture on the cards for the past couple of years. Surprisingly, this is the competitor's' first run with the championship, despite Kuragaki coming up short in previous challenges. Kagetsu and Kaho had regained the titles from Mayumi Ozaki and Mio Shirai back in August after losing them in the main event the month before.

Mission K4 might have lost the tag team championships, but the stable managed to hang onto the OZ Openweight Championship, as Sonoko Kato successfully retained against Yumi Ohka in the main event at Korakuen Hall. Kato won her second title defense after putting Ohka away with the Dragon Valley Driver and her next championship match is already lined up for the promotion's January 10th show at Shinjuku FACE, as she defends the belt against Arisa Nakajima. The other Openweight Championship was also retained on Sunday's show, as Mayumi Ozaki defeated Command Bolshoi with the Uraken. For whatever reason, Ozaki's anticipated rematch against Bolshoi was not saved for JWP's upcoming year-end event and instead happened on Ozaki's platform. It appears that Ozaki has a heavy hand in controlling the booking when it comes to the Openweight Title and it's disappointing that the promotion is being cheated out of the belt being defended  on their shows for Ozaki's political maneuvering.
