Ringbelles Roundup (6/26/25) — Sareee snatches a big one, some weekend previews with SPARK & ASÉ, What’s on the card for EVE & more

It's a flashback to twelve years ago when Kanako Urai took the JWP Openweight Championship hostage after defeating their beloved star, Arisa Nakajima. While other challengers had previously contested for the title, Kana was one of the few freelancers to win it, becoming the first non-contracted talent to hold the Openweight Championship. Following her difficult experiences with compensation issues at Wrestling New Classic, she had no intention of becoming a contracted performer again. Instead, she chose to remain unsigned, allowing her full control over her work. During Kana’s career, there were many opportunities for freelancers, and the strides she and her peers made have significantly improved the situation for younger Joshi wrestlers trying to find their niche without relying on contracts. While being signed to a company offers perks, such as increased online exposure and crossover potential, some women have experienced this and prefer to maintain their legacy independently.

Sareee has had two signature experiences in her career, gaining Western exposure, and is currently making waves in STARDOM. She is now the first non-contracted performer to win the IWGP Women’s Championship, meaning she has no formal tie to the promotion or its affiliate, New Japan Pro Wrestling, except for a few appearances. Since returning to Japan, Sareee seems to have evolved into a new version of herself. Before her WWE contract, she was already displaying signs of becoming one of the most well-rounded performers in the Joshi scene, and her skills have only improved further.

She has outlasted many veterans and witnessed a wave of retirements, yet Sareee hasn’t even completed her twenties and has spent most of that time in the ring. I’ve often mentioned that her energy during her early career reminded me of Ayumi Kurihara, who retired in 2013. Kurihara’s decision to stop wrestling due to persistent injuries was not something she anticipated. There's a common belief that Kurihara would have been recruited by WWE before they signed Kana in 2015, but the company and Kurihara were never in negotiations, which is a long-standing rumor that needed clarification.

Now, on to Sareee…

In a post-match press conference, Sareee discussed her title victory, stating that she plans to elevate the championship to "number one" status and that she will not relinquish the belt "easily." These comments came after she called out the STARDOM roster for not acknowledging her win. Sareee expressed her desire for a championship match against Mayu Iwatani to avenge her previous loss to the former titleholder.

“Honestly, I really wanted to take this title from Mayu Iwatani. I had lost to her once, after all. But more than that, I'm truly glad I got to fight Syuri today. She was really strong, and that's why winning against her means so much." — Sareee via Tokyo Sports ©

Sareee defeated Syuri, another highly skilled competitor. Sareee's journey began when Syuri was having outstanding matches against Kana, which were the highlights of SMASH Wrestling’s events, a predecessor to Wrestling New Classic. Syuri’s extensive background in mixed martial arts gives her a competitive edge, and she has an exceptional ability to blend different styles seamlessly in her performances. The loss at "The Conversion" marked Syuri’s first title defense since defeating Mayu Iwatani for the belt back in April, ending Iwatani’s record-setting reign. Iwatani’s grip on the IWGP Women’s Title endured nine unsuccessful challengers and surpassed two years as champion, making it the longest-sanctioned title under New Japan Pro Wrestling.

The new champion graces the cover of the latest issue of Weekly Pro-Wrestling magazine, which features the caption, “Sareee: Superwoman Legend.” After her championship win, Sareee took some time to speak with Riju Kimoto of Tokyo Sports and even visited the gravesite of Antonio Inoki. She vowed to honor the championship, stating that while she is the fifth woman to hold the title, she does not plan to drop it and will embrace any challenge that comes her way. She aims for her name to be synonymous with the IWGP Women’s Championship.
“(I've worn many belts, but) the IWGP is the best. That said, this women's championship is not a belt with much history. I'm the fifth. I want to build it up properly. I want to have historic matches so that when people say 'IWGP Women's,' they think of Sareee. I don't want this belt to just be a belt to protect, but I want to move forward with this belt as Sareee the wrestler. No matter who comes, I won't run away or hide. I'll accept any challenge, any time, from anyone." — Sareee via Tokyo Sports ©

Sareee anticipates her participation in the upcoming 5STAR Grand Prix, asserting that her presence will significantly alter the level of competition in the round-robin tournament. This event will serve as a critical test for the STARDOM roster, as they strive to defeat every competitor. However, her participation has not yet been officially announced, and no one has been confirmed for the tournament. The only information currently available is the tournament's official start date, which is set for July 27th at the Ota Ward in Tokyo, with the finals scheduled to take place in the same venue on August 23rd.

Sareee’s emergence in the promotion caused quite a stir, but her newfound prominence as head honcho has riled up certain members of the roster, especially Starlight Kid, who’s been working for STARDOM since she was thirteen years old. Debuting in October 2015, Starlight Kid has witnessed the promotion’s rise in popularity in the Western hemisphere and as recently as last year, watched her peers, longtime friends defect to Marigold. Starlight Kid is not the biggest fan of former competitors wanting to crossover– sidestepping STARDOM talent and becoming the focal point of their shows. About Sareee’s inclusion and the debut of Bozilla as the newest member of Mi Vida Loca, Starlight Kid had this to say:

“The big show this time was completely taken over by those two. We need to make sure STARDOM doesn’t get dyed orange." (referring to Marigold as "orange")” – Starlight Kid via Tokyo Sports ©

The event being titled, “The Conversion” is rather on the nose, as we’re seeing competitors that were closely aligned with their opposition, making a change in character. It's going to be interesting going into the 5*STAR Grand Prix how both competitors will fare in the tournament and if this leads to more competitors from Marigold working STARDOM going forward. Who knows.

Let’s take a look at this weekend’s upcoming events…

SPARK Joshi is set to hold its first-ever show in the Houston, Texas area this Sunday night. The card will feature two championship matchups, where the current titleholders will face their toughest opposition in their first defenses.
- Courtesy of SPARK Joshi Wrestling ©

First up, the SPARK Joshi World Championship will be contested as Hazuki defends her title against Maya World. This will mark Hazuki’s first title defense since she defeated Lena Kross in Las Vegas to become the new champion after the previous titleholder, Starlight Kid, relinquished the belt to focus on her pursuit of the Wonder of STARDOM Title.

Maya World will be making her first attempt at the championship almost two months after her promotional debut at the Las Vegas show, where she and current Pro Wrestling: EVE Champion Nightshade faced Aja Kong and Kyoko Inoue but fell short.

In another championship match, the SPARK Joshi Pacific Title will be on the line as Vert Vixen challenges Miyu Yamashita and Airica Demia. This title changed hands in Las Vegas when Vixen unseated Ram Kaicho, ending her almost two-year reign at 671 days. Kaicho became the inaugural champion in June 2023 after defeating SAKI at the promotion’s second event in West Covina, California. She successfully defended the title three times against Alex Gracia, Xia Brookside, and Viva Van, with her last title defense occurring last April.

Demia is already a multiple champion, holding titles in Viral Pro Wrestling and Hooligan Championship Wrestling, as well as being the IGB Super Champion. Yamashita, who held the SPARK Joshi World Title in 2023, could make history by becoming the first competitor to hold both championships if she secures the win.

Other matches on the card include Kaia McKenna and SAKI taking on Yuka Sakazaki and Raychel Rose, Jazmin Allure facing Koguma, and Charity King teaming up with Kalientita to battle Ki Vibez and Ridley Thorne.

Natalya continues to step outside the WWE episodic bubble and face new opponents…

The tenured veteran is booked as the headliner for Reality Of Wrestling’s all-women’s event titled, “Hart And Soul,” this Saturday in Texas City.

The show will be apart of a doubleheader that evening, as the rest of the roster and competitors from WWE ID will be featured on the night’s card for “Glory 4.”

Natalya’s opponent for the night has been revealed — she will be going one-on-one with Promise Braxton.

One other matchup has been confirmed for Saturday’s card — Mia Friday will be taking on Gigi Rey with the winner moving onto the finals of the tournament to crown the inaugural Women’s Glory Champion.

Meanwhile, in North Carolina, the ASÉ Women’s Title tournament continues to unfold…

Kicking off back in April, ASÉ Wrestling is progressing toward crowning its inaugural champion this Saturday in Charlotte. Two matchups are scheduled, with the winners advancing to join Jada Stone in the next round.

One of the announced quarter-final matches is a first-time encounter between Joseline Navarro and Kiera Hogan, who currently stands undefeated in singles competition within ASÉ.

The second matchup features Faye Jackson facing Karen “Bam Bam” Renee, with Jazz serving as the special guest referee. Notably, this will be only the second time that Jackson and Renee have ever wrestled each other, which is quite surprising.

Jada Stone has already advanced to the next round after defeating long-time veteran La Rosa Negra in their quarter-final match in Las Vegas earlier this year.

Looking ahead to next weekend, Pro Wrestling: EVE will host another event in London, aptly titled “Mean GRRRLS.”

So far, six matches are scheduled for the audience at the Big Penny Social on the evening of July 4th. The promotion's singles and tag team championships will all be on the line. Anita Vaughan will defend her EVE International Title against Kris Statlander in her EVE debut.

In the tag team division, Harley Hudson and Lucy Sky will defend their EVE Tag Team titles against Rhio and Emersyn Jayne, fondly known as the “Big Beefy Bitches.” Additionally, Nightshade, the EVE Champion, will be present as she defends the flagship belt against Alexxis Falcon.

The rest of the card includes Session Moth Martina battling Millie McKenzie, along with Lucia and Sadie Gibbs in a matchup titled “Absolute Chaos.” Skye Smitson will face Myla Grace for the first time, and Safire Reed will take on Nina Samuels.

Ringbelles Roundup and its original format were given to me by the co-founder of Ringbelles, Lee Burton. He and the late-Stew Allen had founded the site in 2011 and helped introduce fans of women’s wrestling to the best on the European scene, Australia, New Zealand and everything else in between. Their website, who’s archives can be accessed here and their podcast housed some of the best writing and conversations there was when it came to fostering an appreciation for women in the sport.

I am retired, but I can be found here, as always.
