(08/07/25) — SHINE 83, DEADLOCK, Weekend previews, Joshi contingent in the states, Debbie Kietel strikes gold, & other tidbits
Independent Women Business: DEADLOCK Pro’s weekend lineups, SHINE 83’s full card, Maggie Lee defends in AAW & more
DEADLOCK Pro Wrestling has a busy weekend ahead as their second annual Battle of the Best tournament will be taking center stage, affecting the cards for Friday and Sunday night. There will be a variety of first-round matches featuring the Joshi contingent that’s being brought in to compete, with the eventual winner of the series receiving a guaranteed contract for a future Women’s World Title match. The tournament officially began on July 13th in Durham, North Carolina, with Queen Aminata defeating last year’s semifinalist, Jada Stone, to advance. Former champion Dani Luna will face Lena Kross in her promotional debut on Friday in Cary, North Carolina, marking the first time these two have competed against each other.
On Sunday, Mei Suruga and Emi Sakura will be returning to the promotion after last appearing at DEADLOCK's shows at Shin-Kiba 1st RING in April. The reigning Super Asia Champion, Suruga, will face her trainer, Sakura, in the first round of the tournament. Sakura, a former DPW World Women's Champion, had an impressive reign in December 2022, successfully defending her title five times before losing it to Miyuki Takase on the same day her reign reached one year. Another matchup in the series features the first-time encounter between Hyan and the soon-to-be-retired Yuu. This appearance isn't Yuu's first work stateside or with the promotion, as she has wrestled sporadically over the years. Yuu is set to retire at the tail end of this year.

Maggie Lee’s fourth defense of the AAW Women’s Championship is currently the only title match set for “Take No Prisoners” at the Berwyn Eagles Club in Illinois. Maggie Lee faces the upcoming challenge from Heather Reckless, with whom she shares a loose partnership in TNA as part of the collective formed by Ash by Elegance. Outside of their “by Elegance” monikers, the competitors are no strangers to each other in the ring and have even worked together in a Berwyn Street Fight last February against Shazza McKenzie and Missa Kate.
Lee had previously challenged Sierra for the title last October but was unable to secure the victory.
However, she returned to compete in another Street Fight earlier this year, successfully capturing the championship from Sierra in January, effectively ending her remarkable reign at 462 days. This reign by Sierra stands as the longest since Kris Statlander’s nearly two-year chokehold on the championship from December 2019 to July 2021. Lee has successfully defended her title against Tootie Lynn, Shazza McKenzie, and most recently, Laynie Luck in June. Throughout this time, she has also been juggling the defense of her three other titles, including the DreamWave Women’s Championship, securing her tenth and eleventh defenses against Jada Stone and AMIRA over the weekend.
SHINE Wrestling has a stacked lineup prepared for Sunday’s show at the OCC Road House in Clearwater, Florida. The event is scheduled to celebrate the promotion’s thirteenth anniversary, despite a three-week delay. Four title matches are the prime focus of the show’s card, as one of those matches features the promotion’s flagship belt being put on the line against another champion. It will be the battle of the “Kelseys” as Kelsey Raegan defends the SHINE Championship against the current SHINE Nova Champion, Kelsey Heather. The matchup will be strictly for the main title — not a double title match. For the first time, the SPARK Joshi Pacific Championship will be defended outside its promotion, as Airica Demia’s initial defense since defeating Vert Vixen for the title will be against Lindsay Snow.
Evie De La Rosa and Labrava Escobar will defend the SHINE Tag Team Titles against Sofia Castillo and Bella Snow. Las Sicarias last defended their titles in May, successfully retaining them against Amber Nova and Lindsay Snow in their first title defense. The team originally won the championship by defeating Lindsay Snow and Kelsey Raegan in December. Scotti Sosa's WWN Proving Ground Women's belt will be contested as Clara Change steps up to challenge for it. Sosa became champion in June after defeating Labrava Escobar and has successfully retained the belt three times since then. Mercedes Martinez is the only competitor on this card who was booked for SHINE’s debut on July 20, 2012, and is still actively working with the promotion as she faces Sara Leon. Other matches scheduled for the event include Teal Piper facing Katalina Perez, Amber Nova competing against J-Rod, Mila Moore going up against Jacy Love, Izzy Moreno taking on Alivia Rose, and Jazmyne Hao squaring off with Carolina Cruz. There will also be a six-woman tag team matchup, as Sahara Se7en, Gina Sais Quoi, and Joiya Blake take on Kaia McKenna, Sofia Sivan, and Mila Johnson.
Joshy, Joshi, Joshe News: Debbie Kietel wins gold & Ryoko Sakimura leaves Marigold
Debbie Kietel has won her first Japanese title, becoming one-half of the DIANA Tag Team Champions alongside Ayako Sato. The pair, affectionately known as "Caffeine and Crush," secured the titles by defeating Nanami Hatano and Rina Amikura in the main event of DIANA's show on July 27th in Kawasaki, Japan. Kietel is the first foreign competitor to win this championship and the first overall to hold a title in DIANA. The current championship reign marks Sato's fourth title run, having previously held the championships twice with Hanako Nakamori and once with Jaguar Yokota.

She and Sato had previously challenged the former champions for the belts in April but were unsuccessful. This matchup took place a few weeks after Sato and Nakamori lost the titles to Rina and Hatano in a three-way match that also involved Yuki Miyazaki and Yuko Sakurai. Kietel joins competitors such as Bea Priestley, Debbie Malenko, Hailey Hatred, Cynthia, and Ester Moreno as some of the foreign wrestlers who have held tag team gold on Japanese soil.
Dream Star Fighting Marigold announced that Ryoko Sakimura would be parting ways with the promotion, effective immediately, as the competitor had been granted her release as requested by her talent agency. Sakimura had competed within the promotion for ten months, with her last appearance being at the promotion’s Korakuen Hall show on June 17th. Nothing additional has come out regarding the decision from Marigold’s end. However, Sakimura has shed some light on the situation in her dedicated column for CYZO ONLINE, where she’s been documenting her wrestling journey from the start. Sakimura admitted that she struggled with the duality of wrestling as both a combat sport and a form of entertainment. She noted that she found it challenging to keep up emotionally with the demands of both aspects, feeling a disconnect in her performance. This struggle ultimately contributed to her decision to part ways with the promotion, and she wishes she had taken a more relaxed approach and wants to compete freely and in a more challenging way. Sakimura is hopeful for a return to Marigold. The promotion has recently established its own training facility, with Shuji Kondo as the coach, which you can read about here. This could give her a second chance in her career, and a trainer with different expertise may improve her chances for success.
