Ringbelles Roundup (10/21/15) – STARDOM USA results, Deonna Purrazzo wins ECWA Super 8 ChickFight, Tsukasa Fujimoto ties Tsukushi & more

The roster for the STARDOM USA event
Rossy Ogawa's resilience helped the promotion he founded through its biggest and most significant blow at the beginning of the year that could have resulted in its demise. Ogawa and those within management were called to the carpet and had fingers pointed in their direction for their lack of responsibility in protecting their wrestlers. Ogawa refused to allow the reputation and credibility STARDOM worked so hard for to be tarnished for good and began implementing changes to its policies to improve wrestler safety and morale. More international competitors were brought in and decorated the shows and there were successions to championships and losses along the way. The promotion has been fighting an uphill battle to get things back on track following the incident and departure of Nanae Takahashi.

The booking throughout the shows has been consistent – Hudson Envy was built as a credible heel through the 2015 5*STAR Grand Prix and a formidable challenger to the former and current champion. The improvements to the product's presentation have seen more hard-hitting, action-based matches adopted into the undercards, all while still displaying the vibrancy of fluorescent colors the promotion has adorned from time throughout the shows. However, World Wonder Ring STARDOM had its biggest stride in momentum this weekend. Considered a "dream" by Ogawa and the members of the roster, the promotion worked its first tour of the United States on Friday and Sunday in southern California. Skipping Saturday, the promotion brought in their contracted and freelance talent and matched them up against local competitors in the Los Angeles area and more established stars in the North American indies. Brittany Wonder, Mia Yim, Thunder Rosa, Nicole Savoy, Hudson Envy, Cheerleader Melissa, and current NWA World Women's Champion Santana Garrett were some of the competitors brought in for STARDOM's first effort at establishing a presence in the United States and ultimately worldwide.
Io Shirai successfully defended the Wonder of STARDOM Championship against Mia Yim in the main event of Friday's show inside the Father McGuire Council at the Knights Of Columbus in Covina, California. The match was considered "evenly" matched by those in attendance. Shirai retained with a Moonsault Press, nabbing her fifth successful title defense against Yim. Cheerleader Melissa and Santana Garrett were scheduled to take on Hudson Envy and Thunder Rosa, instead, it would be Melina stepping in as Melissa's replacement and making her first in-ring appearance in over three years. Melina was scheduled to be the special guest referee for the Wonder of STARDOM Title match, as a result, she was taken out of the match and partnered up with Garrett, as they defeated Envy and Rosa following a Springboard Moonsault from Santana on Rosa.

Chelsea was also replaced. Chelsea wrestled her official send-off match for the promotion two weeks ago, as she teamed up with Kairi Hojo to take on Stock and Mayu Iwatani. Stock submitted her to a modified head and arm submission; Chelsea was taken to the hospital afterward to have a CT scan performed to check for a possible concussion, as she took a bad landing on the floor from a flying bodypress to the outside of the ring. She was medically cleared of any abnormalities and headed back to the United States following the extensive tour. However,  she must have been dealing with symptoms and didn't compete the entire weekend. Kairi Hojo teamed up with Kahmora in a losing effort to Hiroyo Matsumoto and Kellie Skater, as they went on to unsuccessfully challenge Shirai and Mayu Iwatani for the titles on Sunday night.

Mayu Iwatani's match against Nicole Savoy caused a bit of discussion on social media. Some people suggested that Savoy should have been dealt a longer match due to her challenging Madison Eagles for the SHIMMER Championship at the tapings the weekend before – I disagreed. Another promotion's booking decisions should not be based upon what another has done. It holds no bearing, regardless if it's an international promotion or anywhere else for that matter. The prime focus of these tour dates was to showcase STARDOM's roster and seek out potential stars to help promote STARDOM USA and the promotion as a whole going forward. It wouldn't have made sense to have Savoy defeat Iwatani, the current High Speed Champion if it is not going to lead to a title opportunity. Savoy would have that non-title win over Iwatani for no reason –  no continuity there.

Sunday's show at the Esther Snyder Community Center in Baldwin Park, California featured two title matches. Cheerleader Melissa picked up her first title defense as Lady Luck Champion against Shayna Baszler, retaining with a Modified Leglock. Io Shirai and Iwatani defeated Kellie Skater and Hiroyo Matsumoto in the main event and became the most successful Goddesses of STARDOM Champions to date after winning their fifth title defense. None of Santana Garrett's belts were on the line, as she defeated Kris Wolf in a non-title match-up. Kairi Hojo and Melina defeated Hudson Envy and Mia Yim, with Hojo getting the Diving Elbow Drop on Envy for the win and Act Yasukawa, Kyoko Kimura, and Thunder Rosa defeated Datura, Nicole Savoy, and Brittany Wonder.

The attendance for the shows has not been released and it's possibly not going to be. Rossy Ogawa stated in an interview back in July that the promotion wasn't "expecting to" make money off these shows, instead it was part of a dream to bring the "best Joshi pro wrestling show" to fans in the area and capture the footage for later distribution. By doing so, World Wonder Ring STARDOM has become the first Joshi promotion to run in the United States – the first time it's happened. The buildings looked packed, based on pictures, and from all fan accounts that were visible online, the shows were delivered and everyone had a great time. WWE Hall of Famer and Commissioner of STARDOM, Alundra Blayze stated in her interview last month that the promotion intended to run more shows in the United States, possibly once or twice a year and these first tour dates were just the beginning of the expansion. For those interested, the matches will be available on ClickWrestle and will be sold on DVD soon.
The promotion has announced matches for this Sunday's lineup at Shinkiba 1st RING, as there will be two back-to-back shows. Their regularly scheduled show will go on first, with their year-annual "Mask Fiesta" following in the afternoon. Datura, Santana Garrett, and Holidead will be making their debuts, as Datura will be taking on La Rosa Negra for her first match in Japan. Santana will be teaming up with Hiroyo Matsumoto to take on Kairi Hojo and Io Shirai, while Holidead and Alex Lee take on Act Yasukawa and Kris Wolf. Mayu Iwatani and Starlight Kid will be taking on Kaori Yoneyama and Momo Watanabe and Hiromi Mimura will take on Azumi. All competitors on the second show will be performing under their masked personas. Mayu Iwantani will be working as "MAYUCHIKA" as she, Ultimo Dragon, and Midnight Angel take on Black Dragon, KAORU, and Scorpio Rosa.

East Coast Wrestling Association presented their second-annual Super 8 ChickFight Tournament on Saturday in Woodbury Heights, New Jersey. Deonna Purrazzo defeated Tessa Blanchard in the finals to become the brand new ECWA Women's Champion and this year's tournament champion. Purrazzo utilized her submission capabilities and won all three rounds of the tournament and her first singles championship of her career after debuting almost eighteen months ago. Jewells Malone was the first competitor to be announced for the tournament, as more first-time competitors in Leah Von Dutch, Terra Calaway, Xandra Bale, Brittany Blake, and Deonna Purrazzo would be joined by former champions, Kennadi Brink and last year's winner, Tessa Blanchard in the fight to become the winner of the tournament and claim the championship that was vacated in Renee Michelle's absence.
Renee Michelle's extensive tour of Japan through Marvelous USA resulted in the promotion announcing she had relinquished the belt and that it was now up for the taking of the tournament winner. The departures of Xandra Bale, Leah Von Dutch, and Jewells Malone opened up opportunities for competitors that are still cutting their teeth in the business to be a part of the tournament, as it was announced that Miranda Vionette would be the replacement for Dutch and last-minute replacements, Savannah Evans and Daysia Gilbert filled out the other spots. The quarterfinals of the tournament kicked off with Brittany Blake defeating Terra Calaway with a small package. Deonna Purrazzo defeated Miranda Vionette, Kennadi Brink defeated Savannah Evans and Tessa Blanchard defeated Daysia Gilbert with a slingshot suplex. Deonna and Blanchard advanced in their semifinal match-ups, they defeated Blake and Brink respectively, as Purrazzo again, picked up another submission win and Blanchard picked up her own with an armbar-like hold.

Deonna Purrazzo bested the inaugural tournament winner in the end and was crowned the new ECWA Women's Champion and became the second woman to collect the coveted trophy. Tessa Blanchard's calendar noticeably filled up with dates after winning last year's tournament and the title – this could be the same for Deonna. Outside her appearances for Excellence Pro Wrestling, Pro Wrestling Magic, and other promotions in the Northeast, she has become a regular competitor in ECWA in the past couple of months. Choosing Purrazzo to be the newest titleholder and as the 2015 Super 8 ChickFight tournament winner was a good decision by the promotion, as this could help her land more first-time bookings with other promotions or lead to new opportunities. The first-annual tournament consisted of familiar faces like Jenny Rose, Annie Social, Gabby Gilbert, Tina San Antonio, and Nikki Addams and then up-and-coming talent Tessa and Renee Michelle, who were both still finding their niche in promotions.
Saturday's show presented that same formula – There is nothing against bringing in competitors that have created a name for themselves on the indies to be in the tournament. I believe going forward that the promotion should book more upstart, unknown talent that needs this opportunity to be showcased, and what better way to do it than be a part of a tournament that was built from prestige? There were dropouts due to travel issues, medical conditions, or other circumstances that prevented them from making the show and it was great to see that ECWA had brought in Daysia Gilbert, Savannah Evans, and Miranda Vionette on hand to make possibly their first high-profile appearance. I think for next year's tournament the promotion should continue with the same formula, but set their sights on bringing in more unknown talent from the Northeast that has not been discovered. There are a lot of up-and-coming competitors rising in the Northeast, and have not been allotted the right opportunity or found a promotion they could consider their "home" and handing someone the chance to be a part of the tournament, even if they don't win could open up doors for them or find ECWA another diamond in the rough.

Tsukasa Fujimoto refuses to be outdone by Tsukushi. The recently turned eighteen-year-old became a record six-time International Ribbon Tag Team Champion back in March, as she co-held the titles with Mio Shirai. Shishunki made it to two successful title defenses before dropping the belts to Leon and Neko Nitta in August, retaining over the likes of Kayoko Haruyama and Aoi Kizuki, Hamuko Hoshi, and Mochi Miyagi. However, if you're not catching my drift, Tsukasa Fujimoto has tied Tsukushi by becoming champion for a sixth time on Saturday, as she and Arisa Nakajima unseated the Orange Happies (Kizuki and Haruyama) of the titles in the main event when Fujimoto pinned Kizuki following a Japanese Ocean Cyclone Suplex Hold and became the thirty-seventh champions. On top of that, Fujimoto and Nakajima have issued their challenge to DASH Chisako and Sendai Sachiko for the JWP and Daily Sports Tag Team Championships – that match is still to be scheduled.

Leading up to the title match, the promotion announced that the Orange Happies' upcoming title defense against Nakajima and Tsukasa had been put on hold until Kizuki was medically cleared to compete after suffering a knee injury. As a result, Kizuki wasn't booked on any of Ice Ribbon's shows this month and hasn't been used since her and Kayoko's succession to the belts back on September 23rd. It appears that the promotion had planned to keep the title match as is and not relinquish the championships by having Kizuki not compete to prevent further damage to her knee. Referring to themselves as "Best Friends," Arisa Nakajima and Tsukasa Fujimoto formed their partnership back in June, just six months after going head-to-head in double main events for the JWP Openweight Championship and the Ice Cross Infinity Championship. They proclaimed that their goal was to become the top tag team in all of Joshi Puroresu and began setting their sights on collecting championships along their journey.

Fujimoto and Nakajima scored their first victory as a team back on June 24th, as they defeated Sakari Otoko and Alexander Otsuka on the promotion's ninth-anniversary show. The Best Friends picked up another win the next month, defeating Manami Toyota and Yuuka, and went on to defeat Hanako Nakamori and Mio Shirai at the following month's "Pure Plum" at Korakuen Hall. Fujimoto and Nakajima again made their intentions to win JWP's tag team straps more well-known yesterday after defeating Rabbit Miu and Sareee in a non-title match. They reaffirmed their challenge to face Sachiko and Chisako for the titles – The Jumonji Sisters have championships in their possession currently, the JWP, Daily Sports Women's, WWWD World, and the Sendai Girls Tag Team Titles, and were unsuccessful in taking the Goddesses of STARDOM belts from Io Shirai and Mayu Iwatani. Regardless of the title loss, DASH and Sendai made history by becoming the first-ever women's tag team to hold separate championships at the same time.

And with that honor comes competitors jumping at the opportunity to dispute those claims by lining up for title shots, with the Jumonji Sisters dodging losses around the clock. It makes practical sense for Best Friends to want to challenge the team that has made history, being that Fujimoto and Nakajima have had impactful accomplishments in their careers. Tsukasa Fujimoto is the first Grand Slam Champion in Ice Ribbon, as she's held every single title in the promotion. She is the most successful Ice Cross Infinity Champion to date, holding onto the belt for 615 days and turning back eleven title defenses during her reign. Fujimoto abolished the title's original weight requirement back in July of 2013 after defeating Tsukushi in a unification match to unify the then ICEx 60 Championship and the IW19 Championship as one, later renamed the Ice Cross Infinity Title. Back in 2007, Arisa Nakajima unified the JWP Junior and POP Championships together after she defeated Hiroyo Matsumoto and Yuri Urai in a three-way Dogfight tournament final to win the vacant POP Title.

Neither promotion has officially confirmed this tag team title match for their upcoming lineups yet and it may happen at one of their year-end Korakuen Hall shows in December. Ice Ribbon will be running the arena on December 31st for "RibbonMania" and JWP's "CLIMAX" will be on December 27th. The championship match will likely be booked for RibbonMania, given that Nakajima had unsuccessfully challenged Fujimoto for the Ice Cross Infinity belt at last year's show – it would bring the story being built full circle, as the former opponents have joined forces and conquered tag team championship gold. If the titles were to change hands, it would be Fujimoto's first time holding a belt in JWP, while Nakajima is a former JWP Tag Team Champion and Daily Sports Women's Tag Team Champion, as she captured the belts with Command Bolshoi back in August of 2012 after beating Emi Sakura and Kaori Yoneyama. The only match that has been announced for CLIMAX is the official retirement match for Kayoko Haruyama, as she takes on longtime tag team partner, Tsubasa Kuragaki.
