Ringbelles Roundup (10/28/15) – Divas Revolution revisited: Charlotte vs Nikki Bella, La Rosa Negra injured, loads of title changes, wins & more

It's mind-boggling that two women on the roster are constantly ridiculed for whom they are dating or married to, whereas the daughter of a former world champion is thrust straight into the title picture and doesn't receive half the criticism that Nicole Garcia and Brianna Danielson are dealt. What's even more disappointing is that WWE has turned these real-life scenarios into pieces of this puzzle, known as the diva's revolution to generate some "heat" for this storyline, instead, it's generating the wrong kind of "heat" and it possible that it contributed to the audience's already low morale for this angle and lowered it even further. About a month ago, my frustration in regards to this storyline peaked while watching the Knockouts Championship match. That following Monday, I was treated to a gossip-fueled in-ring "shoot" promo from Paige that was directed at the newly crowned Divas Champion, Charlotte, the other seven women involved in the storyline, and leftovers of the roster.

I vented about my disappointment in the handling of the segment and the poor writing done by WWE Creative, as it forced Paige into a possibly uncomfortable role as the "voice" of reason. I've stated in the past that the company needed to allow the women proper time on the microphone to help push this storyline further along vocally. Their failure to capitalize on everyone picking apart Paige's accusations and firing back with their one-liners wasn't considered and instead, their rebuttals were saved until a week or two later, or in Natalya's case, your comments were kept exclusively to the website, and not on live television. Paige's mouthing off, microphone throwing, and stomping off were supposed to be reminiscent of something that happened two summers ago – understandably, they wanted to recreate the magic that was made that night. Her random outbursts continued and eventually evolved into her taking on a more self-centered persona and breaking up with her teammates. She weaseled her way back in long enough to earn Charlotte and Becky Lynch's trust, to turn on them yet again.

Charlotte pulled out an underwhelming performance against Nikki Bella in her first title defense on Sunday at Hell in a Cell. Miscues and botches by the retaining titleholder were held together by the veteran competitor, Nikki. Charlotte was determined to quiet all conversations about riding her father's coattails to be awarded opportunities and that she is deserving of everything she has earned on her own. Nikki Bella had a similar story – her hard work and dedication have positioned her in front of opportunities that have taken years to achieve. She too has been accused of taking the cheap route to success through the influence of her very public relationship and doesn't receive the recognition she deserves for, in her opinion, starting the divas revolution. Charlotte's nose was busted up during the title match and it was reported that she might have broken it. Nikki took a bad landing during the match, which could have resulted in a serious injury due to the trauma on her head and neck. The current champion climbed the top turnbuckle and was attempting to put away the challenger with a Moonsault. She got back to her feet and climbed up to the second rope, grabbed Charlotte around the waist, and went for what was supposed to be an Electric Chair spot. Nikki's head thudded onto the mat, as Charlotte backflipped off her and landed on her knees, and the detachment of the hold was visible on camera, as it looked like the challenger had fallen backward off the ropes.

Charlotte has been positioned as the bigger babyface in this storyline, Becky Lynch has been relegated to being the supportive friend and confidant and hasn't been allowed to show personality – Tamina Snuka and Alicia Fox have been dealt the same fate. Brie and Nikki Bella are the top heels, Naomi has been ushered out of her position as de facto leader of Team B.A.D and outshined by Sasha Banks repeatedly. A few weeks ago I was questioned about the company's incapability to produce success with the divas division on the main roster when it comes down to the matches. I offered up the best explanation that I could give, stating that for years the women's portion of the show was treated as a transition to a bigger match, alas the main event and not a must-see attraction. The rebranding of their developmental territory helped reimagine the possibility of the women getting better opportunities at showing and proving that they are capable of putting on a match that could receive a standing ovation and be the main event of a big show. WWE has made changes to the booking of divas matches, by increasing the length of matches – going between ten and fifteen minutes these days and substituting shenanigans for more hard-hitting wrestling holds.

The casual viewer shouldn't be able to point out the visible differences and notice the disconnect between the products right off the bat. One thing that is repeatedly pointed out is that the matches on NXT are better in comparison and pull out the better performances week in and out, non-stop. The multiple tag team matches are still being booked on the flagship show every week and singles matches are being thrown around on Main Event and Smackdown – all building towards nothing in the end. This forced sisterhood on the television product has pigeonholed this storyline into stables fighting for supremacy and one stable being pushed further into the background and not benefiting from the same or equal amount of air time as their peers. The main roster should be a bigger reflection of what was built in NXT, but more polished, groomed, and matured for their flagship shows. Instead, their developmental program resembles more of a finished project and gets the crowd reactions that they are striving for with the diva's revolution. The "we want Sasha" chants are echoed louder and louder throughout the matches on Monday Night RAW and have become a frequent gesture from the live crowd ever since Summerslam.

Banks' popularity skyrocketed through the roof following her match against Bayley at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn and her little interaction in the divas match the following night at Summerslam led to disappointed fans sounding off the next night and have continued to petition for Banks' presence to this day. One of the biggest differences in the products that I have become accustomed to is the raw emotion that is brought out in the matches on NXT – I didn't get that same feeling when I watched the Divas Championship match on Sunday night. Nikki Bella and Charlotte have been intertwined in this storyline since June and at this point, the tension should be at an all-time high and not treated as another singles match thrown onto the pay-per-view for the sake of promoting this revolution. This brings the conversation back to the Knockouts match I was referring to earlier. Four women with little intermingling with each other made a compelling match important to someone who hasn't watched the product in several months. Every woman involved had their agenda to become champion and they could provide great story-telling in the ring that helped bring the backstory alive.

Sasha Banks has the potential to be a breakout star but for whatever reason her involvement on the main roster has her handcuffed and hasn't been handed the opportunity to conduct a promo, which is one of the strong suits in NXT, or enough chances to back up those claims of being a "boss." Instead, Sasha Banks' greatness is to be seen and demonstrated on NXT – the same could be said for Becky Lynch. The purpose of this storyline was to have three top-level talents within the developmental brand brought up to increase competition for Nikki Bella's title reign and kickstart this Divas Revolution, as told by Stephanie McMahon herself. Paige and Nikki are still in the forefront of the title picture and Charlotte is the only competitor to be elevated towards the belt, all while single matches with no build to an actual championship shot are still being booked. WWE is force-feeding this divas revolution down their audience's throat and not letting it gradually develop over time and become a phenomenon like the NXT divas. Their approach to introducing the newer competitors through teams and not as stand-alone wrestlers gunning for the championship; NXT helped introduce unknown faces to a new audience and over time built up each competitor as a formidable contender to the NXT Women's Title and as a breakout star. Maybe in the long run this divas revolution will reciprocate that same payoff.

Weird booking – OZ Academy and JWP held back-to-back events at Shinjuku FACE on Sunday. The selling point of the double shows was supposed to be Command Bolshoi and Leon battling to become the number one contender to Mayumi Ozaki's JWP Openweight Championship and would go on to face her in the main event of the evening show. Command Bolshoi defeated Leon with a Picoknee Smash and for whatever reason the planned title match was thrown out the window for another number one contender's match-up. Mayumi Ozaki wasn't ruled the outcome invalid and requested that there be another contest to determine the challenger, as Rabbit Miu, Bolshoi, and Rydeen Hagane would be taking on Arisa Nakajima, Leon, and Hanako Nakamori in a Last Woman Standing tag team match, or Wizard of OZ Rules. Hagane defeated Nakajima and Nakamori with variations of a Lariat and Leon defeated Hagane with the Capture Buster. Miu defeated Leon and Bolshoi, winning her match against the latter via knockout after handcuffing her down. Rabbit was unsuccessful against Ozaki in the opener of OZ Academy's show, as Ozaki retained with the Uraken. After all of this, it was decided that Command Bolshoi would still be granted her shot at Ozaki's belt. Two championship matches have been announced for OZ Academy's December 13th show. Sonoko Kato will be defending the Openweight Title against Yumi Ohka and the OZ Academy Tag Team Titles will be on the line, as Kaho Kobayashi and Kagetsu go up against Kaori Yoneyama and Tsubasa Kuragaki... Miyu Yamashita won Akane Miura's "right" to appear in the main event Tokyo Joshi Pro Title match on January 4th at Korakuen Hall... Hanako Nakamori and Tsukasa Fujimoto have advanced to the semifinals of the REINA World Women's Championship tournament on Monday, as Nakamori defeated La Silueta with the Destiny Hammer and Fujimoto bested Rina Yamashita with the Infinity. The promotion has announced that the second, third, and final round of the tournament will take place on November 3rd at Shinkiba 1st RING, as Fujimoto will be taking on Yako Fujigasaki and Nakamori will take on former titleholder, Syuri... Kairi Hojo was forced out of Sunday's back-to-back shows due to a concussion. Hojo reportedly suffered the injury during STARDOM's show in Baldwin Park, California, as she teamed up with Melina against Mia Yim and Hudson Envy. Hojo was tested for abnormalities at the hospital upon her return to Japan. None were found and as a result, the promotion announced that the former champion was pulled from the shows. Santana Garrett, Datura, and Holidead all made their debuts at Shinkiba 1st RING. Holidead became the newest member of Oedo Tai, while Datura picked up a loss to La Rosa Negra. Santana has formed a tag team with Hiroyo Matsumoto, calling themselves "Hiro-Chan, San-Chan" and faced Io Shirai and Mayu Iwatani in a non-title match in Sunday's main event, with the champions losing after Santana landed the Shining Star Press on Iwatani. The current NWA World Women's Champion and Matsumoto now hold a non-title win over the champions. Another injury report coming out this weekend is that of La Rosa Negra, as she could be out of competition for up to six months or longer. The former High Speed Champion has reportedly injured both knees while wrestling for the promotion and was unable to walk when she was taken to the hospital after Sunday's show. La Rosa Negra will be required to undergo surgery on her right knee and will be brought back to the United States or Puerto Rico for the operation. Malia Hosaka has started a GoFundMe to help raise donations for the competitor's medical expenses... More STARDOM outtakes, it was announced that there will be a one-day tag team tournament on November 8th, as opposed to the Goddesses of STARDOM Tag League. Hiroyo Matsumoto and Santana Garrett, Thunder Rock, Starlight Kid and Himoru, and Haruka Kato and Kairi Hojo will be the competing teams. The year-annual Goddesses of STARDOM league will begin on November 15th
