Ringbelles Roundup (9/16/15) – Kana bids Farewell & WWE bound, Injuries at Weekend shows, Finals of 5 Star are set, Alundra appears & more

With the thousand-plus in attendance, Kana said goodbye to those who packed Korakuen Hall for her last production of KANAProMania, as she heads back to the United States to begin her career with WWE. After announcing an indefinite hiatus from professional wrestling back in July, it was reported that the former JWP Openweight Champion had elected to retire. That turned out to not be the case, as Kana clarified her decision during a press conference. She stated that she was not retiring from the sport, instead, she would be taking an extended break and finishing out her scheduled dates leading up to the event. From there, speculation began regarding Kana's professional status and rumors started popping up on the internet that she had been signed by the WWE.

It wasn't until she was identified as "Kanna" while sitting front row with Ric Flair and Sgt. Slaughter at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn that those same rumors were plastered into headlines across websites, claiming that she had signed on with the company weeks ago. However, it wasn't until three weeks after her appearance that it was confirmed by WWE that she had indeed signed and would be reporting to the Performance Center later this month. The announcement was first made in Kana's home country of Japan during a press conference; at the time Kana stated that she would be keeping her ring name and would be reporting to the training facility. In her first interview since being signed with WWE, Kana told Sporting News that she jumped at the opportunity to work with WWE after accomplishing "almost everything" there is to accomplish in her eleven years in the business and wanted a new direction. She further stated that she found the divas revolution "inspirational" and is looking forward to competing against Bayley and Charlotte, proclaiming that she has a "tremendous" amount of respect for the second-generation wrestler.

Days before the announcement was made official, Kana relinquished the REINA World Women's Championship ahead of her impending departure from the promotion. On September 4th, the promotion began the first steps to determine a new titleholder following Kana's departure, announcing Hanako Nakamori, Konami, La Silueta, Tsukasa Fujimoto, Maki Naruymiya, Hamuko Hoshi, Rina Yamashita, yako Fujigasaki, Makoto and former champion, Syuri as the participants in the tournament. The first-round matches were held on the show, as Nakamori defeated Konami, Syuri defeated Hoshi with a German Suplex Hold, Yamashita bested Makoto with a Lariat and Fujigasaki defeated Narumiya. Kana wrestled her last match for the promotion in the main event, as she and former nemesis, Syuri defeated her trainee, Konami and Makoto, with Kana getting the Kanalock on Konami for the win.

Just two days later, she made her final appearance for OZ Academy, teaming up with Manami Toyota in a losing effort against Kaori Yoneyama and Tsubasa Kuragaki – Kana wrestled her last match for Pro Wrestling WAVE on Sunday at the Edion Hall; she defeated Sakura Hirota in the first match that lasted three-minutes and again defeated her in the rematch with a Buzzsaw Kick. Kana will be the first Japanese woman employed in the company since Bull Nakano back in 1995. Contrary to belief, Aja Kong was never signed by the WWE following her infamous match-up against Chaparita Asari on Monday Night RAW, which reportedly frightened Vince McMahon. Takako Inoue was the closest being signed back in the early 2000s, but after a poor performance during her tryout match due to working with an inexperienced competitor, it fell through.

If anything, the company has picked up a lot of talents like Finn Balor and Hideo Itami for international exposure in hopes of peeking in those markets. Of course, Kana's in-ring repertoire will be toned down and a moderated version, but her presence still adds a different flavor to the already booming division and the intrigue of matchup possibilities is there. And it won't be long before she wrestles her first match as "Asuka," as she was introduced during an in-ring segment at Thursday night's tapings. NXT General Manager, William Regal introduced the now-renamed signee to the audience on the September 23rd tapings and was taunted and berated by Emma and Dana Brooke and reportedly left the ring "sad," which sounds awkward.

As I said on this week's podcast, which you can check out here, I wouldn't be surprised if the WWE gets behind her using the facepaint she adorned under her villain persona over in Japan and brings parts of her former character into the show, for example, Finn Balor. Kana is very theatrical and I believe allowing her to display that side will be upside down, regardless if she is positioned as a babyface or heel. On top of that, she is a part of a division with women she has never worked with like Bayley, Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks, and Emma. Billie Kay (the former Jessie McKay) is the only competitor that has worked with Kana; they wrestled against one another on SHIMMER Volume 54. Yesterday, she presented her finale of KANAProMania, titled "Pulse" at Korakuen Hall where she teamed up with Syuri and Hikaru Shida in the main event, as they defeated Ryu Mizunami, Rina Yamashita, and longtime rival, Arisa Nakajima. The second round of the REINA World Women's Title tournament will be continued on October 9th; Hanako Nakamori will be taking on Rina Yamashita and La Silueta will go up against Tsukasa Fujimoto.

While Kana was wrapping up her Japanese career, Mio Shirai was finishing up all together. Shirai wrestled her final matches for Pro Wrestling WAVE earlier today, she had a five-match series on the show; her match against Hikaru Shida ended in a time-limit draw, she picked up losses to Ryo Mizunami, Yumi Ohka, Misaki Ohata, and defeated Asuka. She worked her first to last appearance for OZ Academy last Sunday, as she teamed up with Ohka and Mayumi Ozaki in losing effort to Sonoko Kato, Dynamite Kansai, and Aja Kong. Mio will be working her final match under the promotion on Friday, as she, Ohka, and Ozaki go up against Arisa Nakajima, Misaki Ohata, and Tsukasa Fujimoto. Her final match under Ice Ribbon is this Sunday in Saitama, Japan as she takes on Yuuka. The following day she will be presenting her retirement event at Korakuen Hall, involving talent from all four promotions that she is contracted under. The show will feature Kansai, Fairy Nipponbashi, Neko Nitta, and Shuji Ishikawa taking on Ayako Hamada, Kong, Hiroshi Fukuda, and Mochi Miyagi. Ozaki and Yumi Ohka will take on Aoi Kizuki and Shirai. She will also be in a singles competition, taking on Isami Kodaka, and will be teaming up with Misaki Ohata and Tsukasa Fujimoto one final time to take on Hiroe Nagahama, Risa Sera, and Tsukushi. There will also be a battle royal held to end the show.

Another person bidding their farewell this weekend was Athena. She delivered a heartfelt speech following Women Superstars Uncensored's "Excellence" on Saturday in Voorhees, New Jersey, which should be seen by everyone. She told the likes of Kimber Lee, Veda Scott, Jessicka Havok, Annie Social, and others within the locker room what they meant to her individually. The heavy-hearted speech capped off what was the last of Athena's bookings this weekend, as it's been long rumored that she's been signed by WWE. She dropped the AIW Women's Championship on Friday night in Cleveland, Ohio, as Heidi Lovelace ascended the title after answering the titleholder's open challenge. Athena had a title defense in the form of Candice LeRae booked for "Faith No More" and successfully retained with the O-Face and quickly issued an open challenge to the locker room, with Lovelace winning the title via submission.

She finished out the rest of her bookings on Saturday and Sunday, traveling from Cleveland over to the Northeast and back down to Austin, Texas for Inspire Wrestling. Athena wrestled Sumie Sakai and had the match won after hitting the O-Face, but a run-in from Hania caused a disqualification. This led to an Uncensored Rules match to take place in the main event of the show, as Athena and Hania went at it one last time. The problem is, that the finish to the match left a cliffhanger and not one that made sense. An Uncensored Rules match ended in a disqualification, a match where it's anything goes, ended in disqualification after Hania grabbed hold of a chair and it wound up in the hands of Athena and she pretended to the referee that she struck with it. The referee called for the disqualification win to be handed to Hania – again, none of this makes logical sense unless it's building towards a development that is possibly not going to take place.

It was reported by Mike Johnson last week that it was confirmed by "sources" within the company that Athena and other independent talent had signed and would be reporting to the Performance Center later this month. Athena's possible signing has been rumored since attending a tryout back in June, that included Jessicka Havok and Taeler Hendrix. Those rumors resurfaced in the past couple of weeks after various websites reported that she had been signed with no confirmation provided. Though PWInsider has confirmed that has inked a deal, she or WWE has not made an official announcement so it's just speculation and the waiting game right now. Besides the wonky finish on Saturday's show, Athena wrestled her final appearance for Inspire Pro Wrestling on Sunday, as she took the pinfall to Jessica James – a competitor who has played a significant role throughout her career.

While everyone was bidding "goodbye," this weekend's shows did collect some casualties. Cherry Bomb suffered a broken collarbone in the main event on Saturday and managed to finish the match and successfully retain the WSU Championship against Candice LeRae. She was taken to the hospital afterward and it was reported that her collarbone had been broken in half and would possibly require surgery, leading to unanswered questions regarding the title's future. She is not only the current WSU Champion but is one-half of the SHIMMER and SHINE Tag Team Champions; neither promotion has commented on the circumstances surrounding the belts. With the next set of tapings coming up in October, a title defense was expected to be a part of at least one of the five shows that weekend. Recuperating from this injury could take a couple of weeks or longer, as Cherry Bomb could be sitting the rest of the year out.

Co-holder Kimber Lee was also banged, she suffered a dislocated shoulder during her match against Xandra Bale on Sunday. It was reported that the referee had thrown up the "x," signaling that she had been injured. Kimber Lee updated everyone through social media, stating that her shoulder should be fine after rest and applying ice packs, and was seen with her shoulder wrapped up following the match. Lee and Cherry Bomb were scheduled to take on Portia Perez and Nicole Matthews for the first time and were booked as the headliners of this year's CANUSA Classic. Instead, Allysin Kay and Sassy Stephie replaced the Kimber Bombs in the match, resulting in Stephie pulling double duty on the show, as she defeated Jewells Malone and Lee was slotted into Kay's original match-up against Bale.

Speaking of the CANUSA Classic, Team USA defeated Team Canada four-to-two, as Veda Scott, Candice LeRae, Sassy Stephie, and the Midwest Militia cleaned up and pulled in the victories with wins over KC Spinelli, Jennifer Blake, Jewells Malone, and the Canadian NINJAS respectively, while Vanessa Kraven and Courtney Rush picked up wins over Heidi Lovelace and Jessica Havok. Rush was awarded the medal for Most Outstanding Performer for the second year in a row by unanimous vote. No further updates have been provided concerning Kimber Lee's status or whether Cherry Bomb will need surgery or not.

Hudson Envy and Kairi Hojo are headed to the finals of the 2015 5*STAR Grand Prix after becoming the overall winners of the Red and Blue Stars leagues on Sunday's show. Envy bested Io Shirai in the main event at Shinkiba 1st RING in the final match-up in their block and Hojo declared the winner by unanimous decision due to previous victories. Shirai and Hudson were leading the Blue Stars block after last Sunday's show. Shirai and Mayu Iwatani retained the Goddesses of STARDOM Championship against Hudson and La Rosa Negra on that Saturday, with Iwatani pinning La Rosa Negra with the Dragon Suplex. Shirai defeated La Rosa Negra to accumulate seven points in total and Hudson Envy had six points after winning her match against Kris Wolf by forfeit. Wolf sustained a concussion during her match against Io Shirai back on August 30th at Shinkiba 1st RING and as a result, did not compete on that weekend's shows.

Hudson Envy and Kaori Yoneyama received "byes" in their 5*STAR Grand Prix matches against Wolf due to the injury. Wolf's absence resulted in the promotion reshuffling Friday, Saturday, and Sunday's cards; DASH Chisako teamed up with Star Fire in a losing effort against Hudson Envy and La Rosa Negra, Kairi Hojo and Chelsea's match against Kaori Yoneyama and Sendai Sachiko ended in a time limit draw and Queen Maya defeated Chelsea and Alex Lee. Queen Maya was in the lead of the Red Stars block with seven points, as she defeated Star Fire on Saturday; KAORU defeated Haruka Kato but picked up a loss to Kairi Hojo the following day.

On Sunday, Kairi Hojo picked up the count-out victory over Queen Maya to walk away with two additional points, amounting to seven in total. Now tied with the same amount of points, Hojo's tournament wins over KAORU and Queen Maya were the tiebreaker, and was crowned the overall winner of the Red Stars block. Hudson Envy defeated Io Shirai with a powerbomb after an evenly matched contest to finish out the Blue Stars with eight points. I watched exclusive footage of the match and I must recommend that once the show becomes available online, this match is must-see material. Going into the final matches of the tournament on Sunday, I had long predicted that Kairi Hojo would be going up against Io Shirai in the finals – it appeared that the promotion was building toward that match-up before Hojo's reign ended.

I admit that Hojo–Hudson is a more intriguing dynamic. You got your babyface in Kairi fighting for another shot at the belt and a credible heel in Envy wanting nothing more than to take the opportunity away from Kairi and go after the title for the first time. Hudson and Kairi will meet in the finals of the 5*STAR Grand Prix next Wednesday, September 23rd at the Korakuen Hall, as the winner will go on to face Meiko Satomura for the World of STARDOM Championship. Also announced for the show, Io Shirai and Mayu Iwatani will be defending the Goddesses of STARDOM Championship against Sendai Sachiko and DASH Chisako. Chelsea and Cheerleader Melissa will take on Alex Lee and Queen Maya. La Rosa Negra has challenged Star Fire for the High Speed Title and the long-awaited return of Act Yasukawa will be a part of that show. Yasukawa will be wrestling her first match back, as she and Kyoko Kimura take on Haruka Kato and Momo Watanabe. Kimura made her return on Sunday and stated that the stable will be resurrected at the Korakuen Hall, as all members of Oedo Tai will be present.

WWE Hall of Famer Alundra Blayze, or simply Madusa was in attendance at Sunday's show. She watched the final matches of the Red and Blue Stars blocks alongside Rossy Ogawa and Fuka at ringside, making her first appearance since being appointed as Commissioner of STARDOM USA. She conducted a post-show interview, which could be misconstrued and taken out of context due to the bits and pieces that were posted on the promotion's English Facebook page. Having watched the full interview, which I watched repeatedly due to her passion that echoed through her speaking, Madusa stated that the promotion has a lot to "gain and lose" if some changes are not implemented to the product. She proclaimed that she is out for the "best interest" of the women on the roster and that the in-ring aspect needs improvement, continuing on that "a lot of changes, a lot of new promises and a lot of upsets" would on the horizon due to her involvement with STARDOM.

Madusa emphasized repeatedly that the promotion is "no longer for pretty faces" and that the promotion will be bringing more wrestling to the table. That statement alone could be perceived that she is going against what the promotion had built itself around originally and that she had no knowledge that STARDOM was formed around Yuzuki Aikwawa, a gravure idol. Aikawa happened to be under the same modeling agency as Fuka Kakimoto, the General Manager of STARDOM, when she decided to pursue a career in professional wrestling. Rossy Ogawa later approached Fuka about starting up the promotion. Positioning Yuzuki Aikawa as the public face in public, a bunch of models were hired and trained by Fuka (Mayu Iwatani being one of them) as a result, while veteran wrestlers like Nanae Takahashi, Natsuki*Taiyo, and Miho Wakizawa were later brought into the promotion. As the former promoter of JDStar, Ogawa wanted to adopt a similar method to the defunct promotion's "athtress" (athlete-actress) and acquire models and use their marketability and athletic prowess to promote the shows – the same strategy WWE has utilized for over the past decade.

However, STARDOM has not relied on those same hiring practices and has brought in talents like Yoshiko, Reo Hazuki, Takumi Iroha, Act Yasukawa, Kris Wolf, and others that didn't come straight out of catalogs. Yuna Manase was introduced as the "second" coming of Aikawa, and other former idols were still hired. Manase resigned from the promotion earlier this year after a string of injuries prevented her from competing often – this would be the fate of most of the trainees as most would be forced to retire before their official debut or after working a couple of matches. I believe over time STARDOM turned its focus to bringing in experienced workers due to the setbacks in injuries of trainees and it helped out greatly, as the promotion's popularity has skyrocketed with overseas fans due to the shows and great in-ring action.

However, the promotion does produce annual bikini photo books with the likes of Kairi Hojo, Io Shirai, and Iwatani, which might present a conflict of interest. Madusa proposed that the promotion's new direction will be towards more "serious" wrestling and not just a "pretty face," saying it's a full package. She said that for the promotion to be taken seriously and to be a success not only in Japan but in the United States, things need to change. Madusa explained that women can be sexy and great wrestlers, but it's better to combine those attributes than have a separation. Furthermore, the sex appeal of a wrestler should not be all that is explored, instead, viewers should be intrigued to watch the shows for the action and not for who's the most attractive.

I'm sure that Madusa is aware of the various bikini photo books that are produced and wasn't denouncing the promotion's make-up or bashing any of the roster – I believe some people misinterpreted her words and thought she was saying being "sexy" is a bad thing. I think some people forget that Madusa wrestled during a time when a certain look was the be-all, end-all to a women's wrestler. The wrestling was the prime focus – Yes, some women took a great deal in teasing their hair high enough to reach heaven, Madusa might have applied a little more eyeliner than usual sometimes, but being able to work a match was more important than just being "sexy." She wants to bring more "old school" wrestling back into the forefront and mentioned that she was impressed by everything on the show, but wouldn't mention which competitor impressed her the most. Madusa believes that there is room for improvement and that no one on the roster is excluded from doubling the effort in training and the ring. On her first visit to the country in twenty-one years, Madusa said that wants matches to be "tighter" and likes for a promotion to be "tight" and is working towards the best wrestler in STARDOM carrying the "greenest wrestler" to a great match and be able to do the same in another promotion. Her expectations are high and were even considered delusional by some, but she sees value and potential with STARDOM and with their project in the United States and is very passionate about it and that's what counts. Hopefully, these talked-about changes and those that are taking place behind the scenes bring promotion success in their debut overseas and going forward.

Kellie Skater put Evie through a table via powerbomb to win the Falls Count Anywhere match on Saturday night in Essendon. The match-up marked the third contest between the two competitors, as their encounter in August ended in a draw. First clashing back in July to a double count-out, the match was restarted with Evie's hand being raised after scoring the cheap victory on Skater by rolling her up and grabbing a handful of tights. The controversial finish resulted in Melbourne City Wrestling booking a rematch, this time a stipulation would be added. The women would be going at it again in a Two-Out-of-Three Falls match for their August 8th show in Essendon, as they tied to one fall a piece after Skater submitted Evie to a grapevine ankle lock.

The match ended in another double count-out and this time Kellie Skater implemented her stipulation, she challenged Evie to a Falls Count Anywhere match for Saturday's "Clash of the Titans." Both competitors fought all over the arena and even took the fight into the streets of Essendon. However, all the fighting couldn't prepare them for the onslaught that was coming, as Kellyanne ambushed both Skater and Evie post-match and interrupted their show of mutual respect, making her debut. Things continued on the post-show wrap-up, as things between Kellyanne and Evie escalated, as the debutant choked out the Kiwi with ring equipment and had to be dragged off by backstage officials.

Back on May 16th, Kellyanne unsuccessfully challenged Skater for the Pacific Women's Championship, as they fought to a double count-out. She defeated Skater for the title a week later, in the first round of the 2015 Global Conflict tournament. Kellyanne's Warzone Women's Title was on the line during the match, which she retained and became a double champion – so there's familiarity with Skater, whereas she hasn't crossed paths with Evie as much. Though this might be the end of the back-and-forth feud with Evie and Kellie, a new one has started.
