Ringbelles Roundup (7/22/15) - Yumi Ohka Wins the Whole Thing, Indy Talent heading over & MARVELOUS is Coming to the U.S & more

Yumi Ohka became a two-time Catch the WAVE tournament winner on Monday, as she defeated Mika Iida in the finals with a Big Boot. The inaugural Regina di WAVE Champion will be getting another crack at the promotion's singles title, as she takes on Ayako Hamada on August 9th at the Korakuen Hall. Ohka and past year's winners, Hikaru Shida, Kana, Misaki Ohata and last year's Catch the Young WAVE winner, Kaho Kobayashi were given automatic spots in the tournament. A nine-person battle royal was held on the April 4th show at Shinkiba 1st RING, as the four remaining competitors in the ring would be entered and another was to be chosen by GAMI. Ryo Mizunami, Cherry, Sakura Hirota, and Mika Iida outlasted the likes of Yuu Yamagata, Moeka Haruhi, Mio Shirai, Tsukasa Fujimoto, and Sawako Shimono and Rina Yamashita was later announced as the final competitor to be entered.

Pro Wrestling WAVE's annual tournament kicked off back on May 3rd at the Korakuen Hall to the thousand-one hundred in attendance. This year's tournament did not involve the traditional two blocks that divided competitors based on their age, stables, or specific skills; instead, it was a single round-robin block with all ten participants fighting for a guaranteed shot at the WAVE Single Title. This time around, winning percentages or simply the number of matches won determined the rankings – in the past, the promotion used a points system, which calculated your ranking based on the number of points obtained from wins (two points) and not necessarily the number of matches a competitor has won by pinfall or submission. With the old method, a competitor could be ranked higher with a couple of pinfalls, a win through a time-limit draw, or a count-out, which is one point apiece. I continued with the point system for myself to keep track and still turned out with the same results.

On day one of the tournament, Yumi Ohka lost to Rina Yamashita, Cherry, and Kana's match ended in a double count-out, Kaho Kobayashi defeated Mika Iida, Sakura Hirota defeated Hikaru Shida and Ryo Mizunami bested Misaki Ohata. On May 10th, Ohka scored her first "two points" following a win over Mika Iida. By June 10th, Ohka had picked up two additional wins over Kobayashi and Mizunami. Mika Iida and Mizunami were leading the tournament; Iida had collected five wins and Mizunami had grabbed four victories and one time-limit draw finish. On Monday's show, Iida defeated Shida, and Yumi Ohka defeated Kana with the Neck Hanging Bomb in the semi-finals, as Ohka went on to become the first two-time winner of Catch the Wave by defeating Mika Iida in the finals of the 2015 version of the tournament. Ironically, around this time last year, Ohka was set to defend the title against the 2014 Catch the WAVE winner, Shida. Ohka had retained the WAVE Single Title against Shida back in April, she was granted a title shot upon her return from SHIMMER and was unsuccessful as Ohka picked up her seventh title defense following a Big Boot.

The tournament win has placed Ohka back into the title picture – since losing the Regina di WAVE belt to Shida last August, Yumi has not received another opportunity to regain the title. It appeared that Pro Wrestling WAVE was building up towards an Ohka-Hamada main event for quite some time and has been wanting to put the title back around the waist of Ohka. I can't argue with their decision to possibly pull the title off Hamada and hand it back to Yumi for a second reign – Ayako Hamada's reign as Regina di WAVE Champion has been underwhelming at best. She dethroned Hikaru Shida in the co-main event of Pro Wrestling WAVE's "Second Virgin" at Korakuen Hall back on February 11th. Currently one-half of the WAVE Tag Team Champions at the time, Ayako handpicked her challengers for her first two titles defenses. Choosing Mio Shirai for March 15th and Meiko Satomura for April 19th, she successfully retained in both title defenses but has not defended the title since April. In comparison to the two previous champions, Hamada's reign has not presented the frequent challengers, instead, it's like she is keeping the title warm for Ohka. Shida has not received a rematch and there are several competitors under the promotion that could benefit.

The final standings of the tournament are as follows:

Kana [5] wins, [3] draws, [1] losses

Rina Yamashita [2] wins, [1] draw, [6] losses

Cherry [4] wins, [1] draw, [4] losses

Yumi Ohka [5] wins, [1] draw, [3] losses

Sakura Hirota [3] wins, [0] draws, [6] losses

Misaki Ohata [4] wins, [0] draws, [5] losses

Mika Iida [5] wins, [1] draw, [3] losses

Hikaru Shida [5] wins, [2] draws, [2] losses

Ryo Mizunami [4] wins, [1] draw, [4] losses

Kaho Kobayashi [3] wins, [0] draws, [6] losses

However, the winner of this year's Young Oh! Oh! Block was not crowned on Sunday's show, instead, the match has been postponed until further notice. The second annual tournament featured five outside competitors Maya Yukihi and Yuuka of Ice Ribbon, Konami of REINA, Meiko Tanaka of World Woman Pro-Wrestling DIANA, and Yako Fujigasaki of JWP, and the promotion's representative, Hiroe Nagahama all fighting for a shot at the JWP Junior and POP Championships and the prized ¥500,000. Konami and Yuuka earned automatic spots into the semi-finals; Tanaka bested Fujigasaki in the opening round of the tournament on May 29th and Nagahama defeated Yukihi. Yuuka and Meiko Tanaka would go on to face off in the finals of the tournament, as both competitors won their semifinal matches on June 26th. Tanaka defeated Konami and Yuuka defeated Hiroe Nagahama after their first match ended in a time-limit draw; it was restarted and Yuuka picked up the win with a schoolgirl. Instead, both finalists would be forced out of the match due to injuries and unable to finish the tournament. Yuuka was injured first. She complained about suffering headaches and was diagnosed with a spinal cord injury and subarachnoid hemorrhage after a trip to the hospital. As a result, Pro Wrestling WAVE awarded Meiko the final with a "bye" and declared her the winner of the tournament. That decision would be changed – Meiko dislocated her right elbow. It was announced by the promotion's booker, GAMI that the finals of the tournament are being postponed until both finalists were able to return to the ring.

Chigusa Nagayo's MARVELOUS is setting up shop in the United States. It's reported that the promotion will be teaming up with Combat Zone Wrestling for the business venture – DJ Hyde was instrumental in helping Chigusa with the tryouts held in Brooklyn, New York earlier this year, which had a successful turnout. It was originally presumed that Nagayo was only going to recruit more female talent for MARVELOUS, as the promotion's inquiries on Facebook made references to females, by using "Joshi" – on top of that, the first flier for the audition had "calling all female wrestlers" in capitalized, red letters. It was later clarified by Sumie Sakai that Nagayo was seeking men and women competitors, as a big abundance of both sexes turned up at the tryouts. Willow Nightingale, Brittany Blake, Vanity, Davienne, Aria Cadenza, Nina Monet, Renee Michelle, and Penelope Ford were some of the independent talents in attendance at the Ludus Wrestling Center back on June 4th.

Renee Michelle, Davienne, and Penelope Ford are the first American competitors to have aligned with the branch and will be heading over to Japan for training and competition under MARVELOUS, as living accommodations would be provided. However, The promotion's first show in the States has been announced for August 9th in Elmhurst, New York. It will be presented by New York Wrestling Connection at the Queensboro Elk Lodge; Takumi Iroha, Renee Michelle, Davienne, Ford, Nagayo, and Sumie Sakai will be a part of the show along with David Starr and Takaaki Watanabe. Beginning back in January, Chigusa Nagayo started running regular shows called, "Thats Women's Pro Wrestling" under the banner of her company, Marvel, which operates her businesses. Nagayo announced that she would be signing competitors this year; KAORU, Tomoko Watanabe, and Aki Shizuku were the first to join the roster, as competitors from DIANA and freelancers have worked the touring live events; Dump Matsumoto, Mima Shimoda, Takako Inoue, Megumi Yabushita and more. Splitting her time with STARDOM, Takumi Iroha joined back in February.

Here's where it becomes tricky and confusing – Chigusa Nagayo has August 8th marked on the upcoming schedule of shows on Marvelous' website, in big bold letters it reads "CZWrestling," as the promotion will be in Voorhees, New Jersey that day. Nothing more is stated or announced concerning that particular date, besides this "show" being in New York. Perhaps it's about the following day's show or a misprint. It was rumored that Iroha and Nagayo would be working the show, but that's not confirmed. Also, it's rumored that this partnership will not bring about a crossover with Women Superstars Uncensored in the future – which is weird. Considering that the promotion has brought in Jenny Rose, who has been competing over in Japan for several years now, Mima Shimoda for a one-off appearance, and their former champion has toured the country more than once, this would be a great way to filter in a Joshi presence in WSU and expose the Northeast fans and wrestlers to that style, especially those that are not already exposed to it. I'll remain skeptical, as it's too early on in the game to lose hope. MARVELOUS will officially be launched in the spring of 2016.

Sasha Banks, Brie Bella, and Charlotte worked the last-minute divas match at Battleground on Sunday, as Charlotte picked up the win. It's reported that the "revolution" that took place on last week's Monday Night RAW was intended to go in a different direction. It was originally planned for the entire divas division to be replaced by the NXT Divas, which was being "transplanted" onto the main roster, according to the Wrestling Observer. Stephanie McMahon's involvement was always planned, but it was up in the air whether she could be the one to bring them in and take on a babyface role to do so. It's reported that Triple H and Stephanie are fully supporting the storyline and it will be continued... Eva Marie made her ring re-debut at the NXT tapings last week, as she took on KC Cassidy – needs to decide a permanent name for Cassidy; she works the live events as "Cassie." It will air on this week's episode – hopefully, it will deaden some of the criticism she receives. Bayley also made her return to the ring and a number one contender's match to the NXT Women's Championship was filmed for an episode in August... Lana might be stepping into the ring for the first time soon; she's being advertised for a mixed tag team match as part of a September 4th WWE live event, teaming with Dolph Ziggler to take on Summer Rae and Rusev.

Kagetsu and Kaho Kobayashi lost the OZ Academy Tag Team Championships to Mio Shirai and Mayumi Ozaki in Sunday's main event at Shinjuku FACE. Kagetsu and Kobayashi laid out their challenge for a rematch, which the new champions accepted. It will be happening at the promotion's August 23rd show; that show will include Aja Kong, Jun Kasai and Minoru Suzuki taking on Mitsuhisa Sunabe, Ryuji Ito and Yumi Ohka. There will also be a double title match, as both Openweight Championships will be on the line. Despite vacating the title a month ago, Mio Shirai will be defending the OZ strap against Command Bolshoi's JWP belt – Whoever wins the match will be the top-tier champion in both promotions... Tokyo Joshi Pro continued with the remaining first-round matches of their Tokyo Princess Cup on Saturday, as Akane Miura defeated Ai Shimizu and Syoko Nakajima scored a big upset on last year's winner, Nonoko. The semi-finals will take place on August 8th, as Miyu Yamashita will take on Akane Miura and KANNA will be taking on Syoko Nakajima... Naomi Susan has announced that she will be stepping down from her position as "Union Representative" this October. Susan has been managing the promotion since 2007 and has stated that she considered leaving a year ago, but consulted with Cherry, Isami Kodaka, and Shuji Ishikawa as time went by. Her decision is for personal reasons – her resignation takes place after UNION's tenth-anniversary show at the Korakuen Hall on October 4th...
