Ringbelles Roundup (7/29/15) – Thoughts on SHINE 28, STARDOM’s tour in the USA & Meiko Satomura unseats Kairi & more

Leave it to a feud from Girls Night Out 6 to be the match of the night at SHINE 28. Mia Yim and Allysin Kay rehashed their storied rivalry and displayed the magic that made their 2012 confrontations something special to watch – let's not forget the infamous Gogoplata from atop the Steel Cage at Girls Night Out 7, they were dangling from the ceiling at Turners Hall. For those that never got to see their feud in Absolute Intense Wrestling, the bad blood is still there between them, as they spat in each other's faces. They gave everything they had, pulling out move after move, countering and blocking. Mia Yim won the match after getting the Package Piledriver on Kay. April Hunter jumped onto the apron, which brought out Leva Bates; though Bates had good intentions by telling the referee that Hunter was trying to interfere, it cost her Lucha Sisters partner the match. Yim had Allysin covered for the pinfall, but the referee was distracted with Bates and didn't make the count. Yim then becomes distracted by Bates, as Kay uses the opportunity and flattens her with a Discus Lariat for the win.

The Lucha Sisters imploded post-match, as Mia lambasted Leva for costing her the match, even throwing out accusations that her friend has been jealous since she succeeded in the championship. She shoved and flipped off Bates before leaving the ring. Yim had stopped Hunter from taking one of Leva's masks during her match against Amber Gallows – I guess Mia thought Leva's efforts could have been better. It's already been announced that Allysin Kay will be getting a shot at the SHINE Championship, as she challenges Santana Garrett at SHINE 29 on September 4th. Another great match on the undercard was the clash between Vanessa Kraven and Jessicka Havok. Their fight spilled to the outside of the ring early and they clobbered each other with punches. Kraven picked up the win following a Sunset Flip Powerbomb. The two first collided back at SHIMMER's tapings back in October of 2014, as Kraven defeated Havok via count-out following a distraction from Portia Perez.

Santana Garrett's title defense ended in a controversial finish, as referee Frankie Gastineau stopped the match and deemed Ivelisse unable to continue. Garrett worked on the injured leg of the challenger, applying a Sharpshooter. Before long, Ivelisse began refusing to submit to the hold and the referee ordered Santana to release her opponent. Gastineau called for the bell and the match was stopped; Ivelisse could barely stand afterward and collapsed to the mat when the referee tried to help her up. Santana offered her hands to Ivelisse to help her up, but she refused. It's said that Ivelisse was "absolutely livid" backstage and wouldn't comment on the matter. The finish made sense and prolonged Ivelisse's return storyline for a little bit longer, as once again she is knocked out of the running for the SHINE Championship due to injury. The match was fantastic all around – again, the finish was fine, but it followed a string of non-finished matchups on the show.

The SHINE Tag Team Championship match ended in a No Contest; Kimber Lee and Cherry Bomb were scheduled to defend the belts against Andrea and Marti Belle in the semi-main event. However, the title match was disrupted after two people came into the ring and attacked Belle and Andrea, resulting in the referee throwing out the match. They turned their attention to So Cal Val, but the Kimber Bombs made the save for Valifornia's manager. Daffney then entered with steel chairs in hand, as Katie Forbes drove Kimber Lee's face through a chair that was set up with a DDT. Daffney then introduced the unknowns, as Katie Forbes and Amaiya Jade, known as the "Iron Maidens" and proclaimed that tonight (Friday) was their night of "retribution." Ahead of SHINE 28, Daffney pulled all of her contracted talent from the show, with no explanation given. At SHINE 27, Jayme Jameson and Andrea overpowered Daffney's All-Star Squad, as "Crazy" Mary Dobson and Kimberly were unable to withstand. Daffney has brought in some "muscle" to handle her ongoing problems with Valifornia. If the names Amaiya Jade and Katie Forbes are not familiar, both are competitors from the New Orleans-based promotion, WildKat Sports.

The booking on Friday's show included a lot of interference and wonky finishes.  Malia Hosaka defeated La Rosa Negra in the opening match, but the victory wasn't obtained without the help of Leilani Kai. Amanda Rodriguez defeated the debuting Renee Michelle with a rollup and a handful of tights while having one hand on the ropes. Tracy Taylor gained a count-out win over Su Yung after Yung's signature mist backfired and she swallowed it by accident – Yung sold the agony of her predicament well by stumbling all over outside the ring trying to catch her breath. The match was awarded to Taylor upon Yung being counted out – the finish to this match was original and would have been great if Taylor pinned Su clean following the malfunction, instead, that's three finishes that ended with shenanigans.

I would have been content with the finish in the SHINE Tag Team Title match, but the Kimber Bombs title defense was thrown out to introduce a new collective group into the division. Hopefully, Renee Michelle will be invited back after the screwy finish – this can not be a one-and-done situation. Rodriguez needs more matches booked in the future to create a presence in the promotion, besides accompanying Ivelisse to the ring. SHINE's undercard could use more up-and-comers. I don't mind the finish to the Mia Yim-Allysin Kay match, as it gives us a chance to revisit the partnership of the Lucha Sisters that is no longer. Plus, there is a bit of a backstory that could be provided, as Yim and Leva Bates went their separate ways following their loss of the belts. Yim went on to chase the SHINE Title, whereas Bates became a one-woman crusade to purge the promotion of its bad seeds.

There was a shakeup at Korakuen Hall on Sunday. The World of STARDOM Championship wound up in the hands of a rival promotion at the close of "Stardom X Stardom" and ended the defending titleholder's reign. Meiko Satomura slapped Kairi Hojo's hand and refused to shake it after their title match back in June finished in a time-limit draw. Satomura received the rematch she wanted and this time she defeated Kairi for the championship after two Death Valley Drivers. She delivered the maneuver earlier in the match, but Hojo kicked out after getting a two-count. The action then spilled out of the ring, as Hojo and Satomura were fighting in the stands; the momentum shifted after an attempted Death Valley Driver in the aisle was blocked by Kairi.

Hojo delivered a Flying Kabuki Fist to Satomura from atop the hallway overpass and from there the match was brought back into the ring. Kairi missed the Diving Elbow Drop on the first go-round, and on her second chance, Satomura countered with an armbar. Again, she went for another handshake from Satomura and asked for her respect, and again the gesture was not returned, as the new champion suggested that it wasn't the right time. Meiko Satomura has won her first major singles title in over a decade. Satomura's last run with a belt was back in 2005, as her second reign as AAAW Singles Champion was ended by Aja Kong just twenty-seven days shy of closing in a full year with the strap. Oddly – this is Satomura's first championship win in twelve years, including tag team titles. Two weeks ago, Command Bolshoi scored her second JWP Openweight Championship fifteen years after her first reign – it's like longtime, respected competitors are winning titles after such a long period of no contention.

However, Satomura is not the first outside competitor to win the World of STARDOM Title. Back in 2013, Alpha Female dethroned Nanae Takahashi of the "red belt" at "Stardom The Highest" and became the first European to hold any joshi promotion's top title. Instead, Satomura is the first champion to be contractually obligated to another Joshi promotion, SENDAI Girls' Pro Wrestling, which is owned and operated by her. The promotion does not have its champion – this presents an opportunity to defend the World of STARDOM Championship in SENDAI Girls, of course with the permission of STARDOM, and could bring upon cross-promoting between the two promotions and introduce new, fresh challengers to the title.

Meiko Satomura has a twentieth-anniversary show scheduled for October 11th, two weeks after the 5*STAR Grand Prix has concluded. All the competitors in this year's 5*STAR Grand Prix and opening matches of the tournament were revealed during Friday's press conference. Competing under the Blue Stars block will be Reo Hazuki, Chelsea, Starfire, Kairi Hojo, Kaoru, and Queen Maya. Kaori Yoneyama, Mayu Iwatani, Kris Wolf, La Rosa Negra, Hudson Envy, and last year's winner, Io Shirai will be competing within the Red Stars block. The annual round-robin tournament will begin on August 23rd at Korakuen Hall; it will continue throughout the rest of the month going into September, as the finals will be held on September 23rd, as the winner will go on to face Meiko Satomura for the World of STARDOM Title on a future show. Opening matches for the tournament are as follows; Kairi Hojo will be taking on Chelsea, La Rosa Negra will take on Kris Wolf, Reo Hazuki will take on Queen Maya, Starfire will take on Kaoru, Hudson Envy will take on Kaori Yoneyama and Io Shirai will meet Mayu Iwatani. A win is two points, a draw is one point, and a loss amounts to zero points.

La Rosa Negra, Kaoru, and Queen Maya will be making their debuts for the promotion as part of the tournament – this is Queen Maya and La Rosa Negra's official Japanese debuts. Standing at 6'1," Queen Maya will be the first competitor in a long time to tower over the rest of the STARDOM roster since the appearances of "Amazon" Ayesha Ray and Alpha Female. La Rosa Negra will be bringing over her agility, flexibility, and high-flying, which will bode well against the likes of Yoneyama and Shirai. Also announced was the long-awaited return of Act Yasukawa, which will be at the Korakuen Hall on September 23rd.

Continuing with the announcements, World Wonder Ring STARDOM has even bigger news. Their first tour of the United States has been announced for October 16th and 18th, as the promotion will be debuting in the Los Angeles area. In conjunction with Diva Dirt, STARDOM will be presenting a show at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Friday, October 16th in Covina, California, and a second show that Sunday at the Esther Snyder Community Center in Baldwin Park, California. It was announced on Tuesday that Act Yasukawa, Io Shirai, Kairi Hojo, Reo Hazuki, Mayu Iwatani, Chelsea, Starfire, California-based talent, Hudson Envy, Thunder Rosa, and Cheerleader Melissa will work the shows. For those wondering, about the likelihood of competitors from STARDOM being brought in as part of the Joshi contingent at SHIMMER's shows in Cicero and Berwyn, Illinois the weekend before, it's not happening. The promotion will be running the Korakuen Hall on Sunday, October 11th, which is the same day as Volumes 78-79 tapings. Talent will be traveling over to the country for two shows and their month-end show will be at Shinkiba 1st RING that Sunday – not saying that a surprise appearance couldn't happen the night, but there are conflicts in the schedule. Again, it's not a foregone conclusion but I wouldn't hold onto my expectations for it to happen.

Three womens matches filled Alternative Wrestling Show's card on Saturday in South Gate, California. Nicole Savoy scored the submission win over Thunder Rosa, winning with a Triangle Hold – described as one of the "most technical" matches on the card. Raze made light work of Candice LeRae and there was a double title match. Santana Garrett's NWA World Women's Championship was on the lineup against Christina Von Eerie's PWR World Women's belt. The match ended in a double-knockout, as both women exchanged headbutts and knocked each other out, with the referee ruling it a double KO... A Starlets match has been added to New York Wrestling Connection's show on Thursday in Deer Park, Aria Cadenza, Rick Cataldo, Brittney Savage, and Eddy McQueen will be taking on Sammy Pickles, Willow Nightingale, Chrissy Rivera, and Brooke Danielle... Nicole Savoy, Kahmora, and Raze have been announced for PREMIER Wrestling's September 19th show in San Jose. Kikyo Nakamura will be making her debut... Mary Elizabeth Monroe defeated Katarina Leigh for the HLW Women's Title on Saturday

Japan

Chikayo Nagashima has chosen Ayako Hamada as her opponent for her last match under OZ Academy on August 23rd, as Nagashima has opted to become a freelancer after working for seventeen years in the promotion. The announcement was made at Shinjuku FACE on Saturday, as OZ Academy, Pro Wrestling WAVE, and DAIJO presented another "OZABUN" collaborated show, with talent from all three promotions appearing. Also, the next OZ Openweight Champion will be decided through a six-man elimination tag team match between Sonoko Kato, Tsubasa Kuragaki, and AKINO taking on Hikaru Shida, Hiroyo Matsumoto,  and Arisa Nakajima – I'm guessing whoever scores the winning pinfall is the new titleholder... GAMI announced two additional matches for WAVE's August 9th show at Korakuen Hall; Rina Yamashita will be defending the JWP Junior & POP Championship against Kaho Kobayashi. Yamashita was supposed to defend her title against the winner of the Young Oh! Oh! tournament, but since a winner was not determined, she will be taking on last year's winner instead. And Hiroe Nagahama will take on Michiko Miyagi... Kaoru Ito retained the DIANA World Championship against Keiko Aono for a second time on Sunday. The promotion will be crowning new WWWD Tag Team Champions on August 16th, as Kyoko Inoue and Yumiko Hotta will take on Manami Toyota and Mima Shimoda for the vacant titles... So the main event for Nanae Takahashi's debut of SEAdLINNNG on August 26th will be Takahashi and Ayako Hamada taking on Meiko Satomura and a partner of her choosing... DASH Chisako and Sendai Sachiko unseated Leon and Ray of the JWP Tag Team Championship and the Daily Sports Tag Team Championship on Sunday at the Nagoya Diamond Hall, as Chisako won the match with a Hurricanrana on Leon. This marks the second title reign for the Jumonji Sisters; their previous run was ended after Sachiko suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus and was forced to undergo surgery. The titles were vacated, as Command Bolshoi and Kyoko Kimura won the titles in a decision match over Rabbit Miu and Tsukushi last May...
