Ringbelles Roundup (8/19/15) – Mayumi Ozaki finally wins, Eva Marie is most hated? New matches for STARDOM's 5*STAR GP & more

Mayumi Ozaki did something that appeared to be unattainable for so long on Sunday and won a championship that she last challenged almost twenty years ago. With the thousand-plus in attendance at Korakuen Hall, Ozaki dethroned Command Bolshoi of the JWP Openweight Title in the main event of "Pure Plum" and finally captured the oldest active belt in all of joshi puroresu. Not assuming that becoming an Openweight Champion has alluded Ozaki throughout her career, but I would have expected her to win the title at some point as opposed to now. Going back to August 10, 1996, Mayumi Ozaki had her first and then only challenge for the title. She went toe-to-toe with Dynamite Kansai in the main event at Korakuen Hall, as Kansai successfully retained the championship.

It would be nineteen years before Ozaki would receive another crack at the title, on top of that it would be several years for Ozaki to be brought back into the promotion as a focal point, let alone as their champion. Like Ozaki, Command Bolshoi went for an extended period before getting another opportunity at the title. It took fifteen years for Bolshoi to become JWP Openweight Champion for a second time, last holding the belt back in 2001. After winning the championship from Kayoko Haruyama in July, Bolshoi selected Ozaki as her first opponent and announced that the title defense would take place at the year-annual Plum Mariko Memorial Show.

For those not familiar, Plum Mariko tragically died on August 16, 1997, after taking a Ligerbomb from Mayumi Ozaki during their match the night before. Mariko teamed up with Command Bolshoi (working under her "Bolshoi Kid" gimmick) to take on Ozaki and Reiko Amano (Carlos Amano) at the Hiroshima Sun Plaza in Hiroshima. Ozaki performed the Ligerbomb as normal and won the match. It wasn't until after the match that things turned for the worse; Mariko never regained consciousness and passed away several hours later. She was rushed to a local hospital and was pronounced dead after doctors performed surgery to no avail, becoming the first Japanese wrestler to die from injuries suffered in a wrestling match. It was claimed that Plum had sustained several concussions but continued to wrestle. She reportedly had a brain abscess and never got properly treated for the condition; Mariko was knocked out after taking the move and was heard snoring, which is a sign that her brain was bleeding.

It is believed that Plum Mariko had gone into the match already with symptoms of brain damage and the bumps and blows worsened her condition. Mariko had complained of headaches in the days leading up to the show and been struggling with memorizing finishes to matches and missed spots; JWP reportedly noticed a change in Mariko but didn't know of her continued headaches, as Plum feared she would be forced to retire by the promotion. The head trauma ultimately led to her death and she never sought out medical treatment, which could have prevented this from happening. Before anyone begins pointing fingers at Ozaki, it was an accident. Some of the roster were aware of Mariko's injuries, but not to the fullest extent, as she possibly didn't inform anyone besides those she confided in.

The following day, Mayumi Ozaki, Plum, and Dynamite Kansai were scheduled to celebrate their eleventh anniversaries in professional wrestling, instead, the tragedy derailed the plans and the show was turned into a tribute. Ozaki continued working for JWP until 1998 when she became a freelancer and began promoting her shows that featured members of her OZ Academy stable; it eventually evolved into a full-time promotion. It would be eight years before Ozaki set foot back in JWP and has made sporadic appearances over the years but remained a consistent player in OZ Academy.

For whatever reason, the promotion pulled the title switch and ended Command Bolshoi's reign in her first title defense and not stacked her up against the JWP brass. Since Kana unseated Arisa Nakajima for the belt back at the memorial in 2013, the promotion has been going for these angles involving outside talent winning one of their titles or the promotion has been infiltrated by other Joshi promotions. Post-match, Ozaki taunted the roster by stepping on the championship belt and the trophy that was presented and ripped the match declaration paper in half. This led to a brawl between her, the Police, Mika Nishio, and the JWP roster, as the same disrespect that was displayed during Kana's title win had once again brought unrest to the promotion. Rabbit Miu and former champion, Arisa Nakajima laid out their respective challenges to Ozaki to bring the championship back where it belongs.

With Ozaki's victory, all of JWP's belts are now held by non-contracted talent; DASH Chisako and Sendai Sachiko of SENDAI Girls hold the JWP and Daily Sports Tag Team Championships and WAVE's Kaho Kobayashi holds the JWP Junior & POP Championship. Speaking of Kobayashi, the number one contender to her title was determined, as Yako Fujigasaki defeated Konami with a double-under hook suplex hold. The winner of this year's Young Oh! Oh! Block was supposed to be next in line for a shot at the title. Instead, Pro Wrestling WAVE announced that the final was postponed until further notice, as finalists Yuuka and Meiko Tanaka were both injured. The second annual tournament winner would receive a shot at the titles, then held by Rina Yamashita and the prized ¥500,000. In the meantime, the promotion went forward and booked the match following Kaho Kobayashi's succession to the title. Yako Fujigasaki will be challenging Kobayashi for the title. The official date for the match is still to be announced.

Ahead of this Sunday's kick-off, World Wonder Ring STARDOM has announced additional matches for this year's 5*STAR Grand Prix. The month-long tournament will see the promotion's entire roster fighting for a shot at the World of STARDOM Title, currently held by Meiko Satomura. Everyone will be split into two leagues, Red Stars or Blue Stars, with the winners going head-to-head in the finals on September 23rd. This time around, there will be twenty-two first-time matchups. Not only will competitors within STARDOM be facing off for the first time, but first-time participants, La Rosa Negra, KAORU, and Queen Maya will be taking on everyone for the very first time – which is a completely different experience.

Io Shirai took last year's tournament and defeated the now-retired, Yoshiko in the finals, as the impending rematch for the World of STARDOM Championship was never booked. Instead, Yoshiko defended the title against Saki Akai at "Year-End Climax" in December and went on to pull another title defense against Nanae Takahashi before being stripped of the belt in late February. Yoshiko succeeded in her first singles title back at "Stardom X Stardom" after she ended Shirai's 468-day reign, failing in her eleventh title defense to the 21-year-old despite originally defeating her the June previous at Korakuen Hall. Io defeated Nanae Takahashi in the finals of the Red Stars block; both competitors had collected six points, with Shirai finishing with eight points following the win. Yoshiko became the overall winner of her block after besting Takumi Iroha to walk away with seven points. On September 23rd of last year, Io defeated Yoshiko in the finals of the 2014 5*STAR Grand Prix with a Moonsault Press, earning another shot at the title, and picked up the clean victory over the titleholder.

Now for the matches – Kairi Hojo and Chelsea will have their first showdown on Sunday at Korakuen Hall, as the current Artist of STARDOM Champions could implode. In addition, the Goddesses of STARDOM titleholders will be up against each other; Io Shirai takes on Mayu Iwatani. Star Fire will take on KAORU, Reo Hazuki will take Queen Maya, La Rosa Negra will go against Kris Wolf and Kaori Yoneyama will face Hudson Envy – all first-time meetings. The tournament will resume on August 30th, as Wolf will battle Shirai for the very first time. Hudson Envy will take on La Rosa Negra, and it is hard to believe that this will be their first time working together.  And Reo Hazuki will take on Chelsea – another first time.

There will be more first-time collisions on September 4th; Queen Maya will take on KAORU, and Kris Wolf will take on Hudson Envy – Oedo Tai has been stacked against each other as of late. On September 6th, Io Shirai and La Rosa Negra will go at it in possibly one of the more unique pairings in the tournament. First showdowns include; Chelsea taking on Queen Maya and Kairi Hojo taking on KAORU. Mayu Iwatani will take on Hudson Envy, despite crossing paths in tag team matches this will be their first singles match against one another. Like Iwatani and Hudson, Chelsea and Star Fire will meet for the first time on September 9th. Again aside from their tag team collisions, they have not faced off in one-on-one competition.

The final standings in the round-robin tournament will be determined at the September 13th show at Shinkiba 1st RING. Competitors will have their last chance to gather enough points to become the overall winner of their league and go into the final a week later. A win through pinfall or submission will amount to two points, a draw equates to one point and a loss amounts to zero. The rest of the matches for the tournament between August 30th and September 13th are listed below. Those with an asterisk beside them are the first-time matches. The tournament will conclude at the Korakuen Hall on September 23rd.
