Ringbelles Roundup (8/5/15) – LaPrade & LuFisto exit Femmes Fatales nd title changed hands, Dobson and Jessicka Havok main event & more

Jessika Black won the Femmes Fatales International Championship in a three-way match with Stacy Thibault and LuFisto on Saturday in Montreal. The title change came as a surprise to everyone following the cancellation of Femmes Fatales XVIII back in June. On top of that, a largely unknown, up-and-coming wrestler now holds the championship after less than a year of experience. A new direction for the promotion has brought about the title switch and several moderations made backstage that are now public.

Coincidently, Femmes Fatales XVIII was scheduled to take place on Saturday in Montreal – LuFisto would be teaming up with Vanessa Kraven in the marquee tag team main event, up against Cheerleader Melissa and Courtney Rush. At Femmes Fatales XVII in April, LuFisto became a two-time nCw Femmes Fatales International Champion after she defeated Courtney Rush and Saraya Knight in a No Disqualification, Elimination Triple Threat match. Rush was eliminated from the match first by LuFisto and was attacked for doing so. LuFisto then whaled multiple chair shots to Knight's head and won the match, all to be ambushed by Cheerleader Melissa and the former champion afterward. Vanessa Kraven came to the new titleholder's defense and the match was set up from the fallout, as LuFisto challenged Rush and Melissa to take on her and Kraven.

Two months ahead, it was announced that nCw Femmes Fatales had canceled the scheduled show, with the promotion claiming it was due to "some constraints" that led to the decision; all tickets purchased would be refunded and they were planning to reschedule the event for a later date. That didn't happen. It was clarified that Femmes Fatales would not be doing shows for the time being and that the promotion is still running – no need for speculation. On Saturday, Northern Championship Wrestling held two back-to-back shows in Montreal, Quebec. Jessika Black, Deziree, Eve, and Mary Lee Rose all competed in the four-way match on the first show for the number one contendership to the title. Black won the match after getting the spear and went on to face LuFisto on the evening show, as Stacy Thibault was added to the match due to a contract signed by Commissioner Joey Soprano that authorized her participation.

LuFisto was pulled out of the ring and ate a superkick from Leon Savor after she attempted the pinfall on Thibault following a top rope headbutt. With the champion knocked out cold, Stacy had the championship victory at her fingertips, instead, Jessika rolled her up with the small package and became the sixth Femmes Fatales International Champion. For those wondering "Who is Jessika Black?," she was trained under Dru Onyx and made her in-ring debut last October. Black and Stacy Thibault were booked against one another for their debuts at Femmes Fatales XVII, as both graduates of the Torture Chamber Wrestling Dojo went head-to-head, with Black picking up the win. That same event had a number one contender's three-way match; Sweet Cherrie defeated Portia Perez and Sassy Stephie. It appeared that Cherrie would be going for her title shot at the next Femmes Fatales show (her fifth) with LuFisto defending against her in the headliner – that might not be the case.

Pat Laprade let the cat out of the bag so to speak in the comments section on SHIMMER's Facebook group. He stated that he and LuFisto were "no longer working" for Femmes Fatales and both had been let go by Northern Championship Wrestling, as they would be running the women's division from here on out. He continued, saying that LuFisto "might" wrestle for the promotion if she's booked and that the title change over the weekend had nothing to do with the adjustments behind the scenes. LuFisto clarified the situation in a post on Facebook, she stated that she was no longer working for the promotion and was told by management that though her contributions in the ring and backstage were appreciated, they wouldn't be booking her consistently as a wrestler or a consultant, as she and booker, Pat Laprade were let go and the operations of Femmes Fatales would be under their full control. Instead, Northern Championship Wrestling will focus on bringing in local talent and students of Torture Chamber for their shows as opposed to flying in international talent.

Their departures follow that of Stephane Bruyere, as he stepped down from his role of talent coordinator for Femmes Fatales after five and a half years back in November. His position was then taken over by Pat Laprade, as he too is gone from the promotion. I don't want to jump on the bandwagon that Femmes Fatales will not be the "same" without their contributions, though it's hard not after so many influential people have left the promotion. In his time, Bruyere helped establish Femmes Fatales as one of the top all-female promotions in North America, joining SHIMMER and Women Superstars Uncensored and later SHINE Wrestling. Whether it is the booking decisions, the great matches, or talent that is brought or discovered through the promotion, Femmes Fatales became a sought-after product that is only available through DVD distribution, attending the shows, or word of mouth. It's not known if the promotion will continue with the stand-alone women's shows; it would be disappointing if they weren't.

Jessika Black has been ushered in as the new titleholder while the promotion is still reconfiguring. I think it's a good opportunity for Black – Femmes Fatales must see loads of potential in her and see her becoming the next breakout star. It is an interesting move to make. Not only was the title given to a not-so-experienced, unknown competitor, but the promotion has chosen Black to be the head of their women's division and not a bigger, more relatively known persona to represent them. Again, I think this is a good opportunity and decision, especially if Femmes Fatales intends on working with more local talent that might not been utilized in the past. Black is a local talent and her presence ensures that the promotion will be stepping in that direction and bringing in prospects from around Montreal and Quebec. It appears that the promotion no longer wants to rely on bigger, more relatively known talent for shows and wants to build its stars; Femmes Fatales has served as the hub for women's wrestling in Montreal and helped introduce talents like Kalamity and Quebec-based wrestlers like Pink Flash Kira, Angie Skye, Sweet Cherrie and more to the world and all received international exposure through the promotion. Not saying that the promotion would not indefinitely bring in LuFisto or former champion, Courtney Rush or anyone else for one-off appearances, it's just right now that doesn't look to be a part of the plans. It remains to be seen what the promotion has planned going into the future. As for Jessika Black, she is currently on a tour over in Ireland and will be defending the Femmes Fatales International Title.

However, one title did not change hands this weekend in Willowbrook, Illinois. "Crazy" Mary Dobson is still the RPW Women's Champion after knocking off Jessicka Havok in the main event on Saturday night. The show, "Death Proof," was headlined by another defense by Dobson, her fourth since becoming champion. The size difference worked to Havok's advantage, as she overpowered Dobson at every twist and turn. Dobson wasn't intimidated by her and kept bringing the fight to her opponent and eventually got Havok off her feet long enough for the three count and retained the championship.

RESISTANCE Pro announced that they will be presenting the third-annual Samuel J. Thompson Memorial Tournament on September 19th. The promotion holds two separate tournaments for this occasion, as the winner of the women's will go on to take on Dobson for the belt later in the show. Heather Owens (replacement for Allysin Kay), Angel Dust, and Leah Von Dutch were the first competitors to be announced for the tournament so far, as Dobson has entered herself into the tournament and will be putting her title on the line instead of kicking back and watching the action. "Rolling Thunder" takes place on September 19th in Lockport, IL.
